Kuns seeks championships at BG and World Series

As far as Drew Kuns is concerned, the NABF College World Series won't get here soon enough.

“I can't wait,” said Kuns, a designated hitter/first baseman for the Ohio Monarchs Gold team. “It's going to be great. Our team's good; we're on a streak right now.”

“We're hoping to go in there and dominate like they did two years ago - go in there and win,” Kuns said. “We have great chemistry because we're all from around Toledo. We all played with each other in high school and now we can join together to make a good team. It's up there with the teams I've played on. It's the second-best team I've played on in the summer. There's some great talent on this team.”

Kuns, a Clay graduate, was the City League Player of the Year in 2009. A sophomore-to-be at Bowling Green State University, Kuns said he's looking forward to helping the Monarchs regain the NABF World Series title they won in 2008.

There hasn't been much of an offseason for former Woodmore and current University of Michigan discus thrower Erin Pendleton.

Fortunately, Pendleton has taken full advantage of her time off from school this summer.

The Michigan sophomore took first place in the discus on June 25 at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Her throw of 172-04 was enough to qualify her to compete as a member of Team USA at the IAAF World Junior Championships from July 19-25 in Moncton, Canada.

As a Team USA member, Pendleton, 19, competed against Junior athletes from all over the world.

This year marks the fourth IAAF Junior World meet for Pendleton, whose Junior eligibility expires this year. She placed fifth at the IAAF World Youth Championships in 2007 and 12th at the IAAF World Junior Championships in 2008.

“She feels a little old,” said Pendleton's father/coach, Mike Pendleton.

On Tuesday, Erin competed in Group B at the IAAF event and threw 169-75 to take second behind group winner Irina Rodriguez of Portugal, who threw 170-04. The Junior women's finals were to be held Thursday night.

Genoa heads into final year on gridiron with 11 titles
According to research on the Suburban Lakes League over its 48-year history since 1972-73, Eastwood has done the best overall in football and volleyball, Genoa tops in boys soccer, Lake the best in girls soccer, Woodmore in girls cross country, and Lakota is No. 1 in boys cross country.

The research, done by Eastwood 1968 graduate and long-time golf coach Mike Gardner, began during his college days at Bowling Green State University.

The SLL is heading into its final school year of competition. In 2011-12, the Northern Buckeye Conference will begin with Fostoria, Rossford, and former SLL members Eastwood, Lake, Elmwood, Woodmore, Otsego, and Genoa. SLL charter member Gibsonburg will begin its first year of competition in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, Lakota left last year for the Midland Athletic League.

So far, Genoa leads with 11 football championships. The Comets are followed by Eastwood (10), Gibsonburg and Otsego (7 each), Elmwood has (6), Woodmore (5), Oak Harbor (4), and Lake, Northwood, and Lakota each have one.
