Traver chosen Outstanding Wrestler at Mal Mickey Invite
Traver was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Mal Mackey Fremont Ross Invitational as he won "the tournament's toughest weight class in dominating fashion," Comet coaches said in an e-mail to The Press.
Traver scored 17 points, leading the Comets to its first team championship of the season.
The Comets were able to place 10 of their 12 wrestlers in the eight-team pool tournament. Also starting the new year off hot were juniors Shawn Gantka (119) and Garrett Scott (160), who each recorded four falls and finished first and second respectively in their weight classes.
Freshmen Seth Morrison (103) also finished on top of the winners' podium with Traver and Gantka. Other place winners for the Comets were Jake Winters (189) second, Dustin TenEyck (145) second, Nick Keller (215) third, Jake Sparks (HWT) third, Ryan Szymanski (140) fourth, and Drew Keenan (125) fourth.
Genoa scored 126½ points, followed by Clay (118½), Ross (116), Port Clinton (114), Perrysburg (94), Waite (77), and Oak Harbor B team (34).
Comet Matmen cut through the competition as they defeated Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic and Bowsher by a combined score of 118-24 in a tri-meet.
Genoa coaches say the team "wrestled solid" as they tallied 11 pins out of their 22 victories. The Maroon and Grey first squared off against fellow Division III rival St. Joe, who the Comets beat 64-9. Bowsher was the next test for the Comets as they won their second dual of the night, 54-19. The Genoa Grapplers improved their dual record to 3-1 on the season.

Double-double
Brittany Darling (Genoa) recorded two double-doubles last week. She had 12 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots as the Owens College women defeated Cincinnati State, 95-61. Owens is now 15-2 (2-0) on the season. Cincinnati State is now 7-7 (0-1) on the season. Owens is still ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA D-II poll.
Jasmine Blanton (Notre Dame) scored 20 points for Owens; Sarah Clark (Delphos St. John's) had 12 points; and Rashanna Johnson (Columbus Whitehall) had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals. Blanton is the national NJCAA Div. II player of the week.
Owens defeated Cuyahoga CC 81-40 as Darling had 15 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Renee Bidlack (Wayne Trace) had 13 points, Clark had 11 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, and Blanton scored 11 points and had seven steals and four assists. Cuyahoga fell to 3-5 (0-2).

Cow Pie Bingo tickets for an Oak Harbor wrestling fundraiser are $10 each. Each ticket represents a square on the grid which will be laid out at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds for a chance to win $2,500. A cow is let loose to graze over the grid with the intent of dropping a cow pie. The square the cow pie lands in wins the grand prize. This event will take place on April 11 at 11 a.m. Tickets are available through Josh Overmyer at 419-392-5729. Please return all sold and unsold tickets to Overmyer or Bill Scherf by March 12.
