Monarchs begin trek back to College World Series

The other five teams playing in the now mostly wood-bat summer collegiate Toledo Fed league this summer are the Northwest Ohio Dirt Devils, the Ohio Tornadoes, Ohio Legends, Glass City Elite, and (Toledo) All-Americans (formerly All-American Coach).

The Ohio Monarchs Gold won the 2008 NABF College World Series by defeating the Long Island Astros in the championship. Youngstown State outfielder Cory Hornyak (Genoa) was named the tournament’s MVP.

Local players on the Gold team’s roster this summer include Hornyak, Ben Kauder (St. John’s Jesuit/Oberlin), and Casey Wincksowski (Clay/Owens CC). Playing for the Monarchs Blue are Alex Timofeev (Clay/Defiance), Cody Fisher (Gibsonburg/Ohio Northern), Cody McPherson (Lake/Bluffton), Shane McGaharan (Northwood/Olney Central CC), and Shane Pfouts (Lake/Urbana).

The East Suburban Soccer League will host a Dutch Summer Soccer Camp at Fireside Park in Millbury June 22-26 with the Midwest Soccer Academy. For ages 5-8, (half day, 9 a.m.- noon) and ages 9-16 (1 p.m.-4 p.m.) cost is $129. For a full day (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) for ages 9-16, cost is $159. The SLL will host a Challenger camp the week of July 20-24 at Fireside Park in Millbury for players ages 3-18. The Lenexa, Kansas-based Challenger Sports Corp. camps across the country are operated by 750-plus British coaches. With 92,000 campers in 2008, Challenger Sports blew past its 2007 camp enrollment numbers of 82,000.
