Bowling Green pitcher Kevin Leady (Eastwood) started the second game on the mound in helping the Bowling Green State University baseball team earn a 3-2, 7-5 doubleheader sweep of Ohio University in games two and three of three-game weekend series at OU's Bob Wren Stadium.


With the two victories, the Falcons earned their second MAC weekend sweep of the season and their first series sweep of the Bobcats in Athens since 1976.
The right-handed senior Leady (3-4) worked a solid five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits and earning the win.

On Tuesday, 12 runs in the first five innings helped BG to a 15-5 come-from-behind victory over the Eastern Michigan Eagles in non-conference play at Warren E. Steller Field. With the win, BG improved to 24-18 overall.

Leady is third on the team in ERA at 4.98 with 13 appearances and eight starts. In 43.1 innings, he has 29 strikeouts and 15 walks.

Two freshman pitchers are also seeing action — Charles Wooten (Woodmore) and Patrick Martin (Clay). Wooten is making the best of it, appearing in 15 games in relief duty with one win, no losses, a 5.12 ERA, 29 strikeouts and 15 walks. Martin has appeared in two games, striking out three and walking two with no decisions, and he also has two appearances at the plate.

At the plate, Derek Spencer (Clay) is second on the team in batting (.373), first in slugging percentage (.641), has 53 hits, 10 doubles, two triples, eight home runs, and 42 RBI. Senior teammate, infielder Ryan Price (Oak Harbor) has three hits in 14 at bats, but two of them are doubles leading to four RBI.

Hernandez to Carnegie
Alex Hernandez of Eastwood signed with Carnegie Mellon University last week to play football and compete in track and field.

Hernandez was a First Team All-SLL center on an Eagle team that made it to the regional finals in football, and he was the SLL champion in the shot put and discus in 2007. His grade point average at Eastwood is 3.97 and he will graduate in the top 10 percent of his class this June. He plans to major in chemistry and pre-law.

"I feel fortunate to be able to attend such a prestigious University, and I'm glad that football and track and field opened the doors for me at Carnegie Mellon," Hernandez said.

B-C-S Volleyball
The Community Education Adult Co-Ed Winter Volleyball League recently completed another season with 12 adult co-ed teams competing on Sunday evenings.

Varga Custom Concrete emerged as the season winner with a record of 30-3, narrowly defeating the Itsy Bitsy Spikers, also with a 30-3 record. Spike This finished third at 27-6 and the Toussaint Tornadoes, with Connie Moore as captain, came in fourth with a season record of 21-12.

All 12 teams then competed in a round-robin tournament, with four teams advancing to the final competition, which was double elimination.

Varga Custom Concrete, with captain Pam Butzin and other team members Scott Helmke, Andy Miller, Craig Jess, Christie Slauterbeck, Jeff Helmke, and Betsy Helmke, won the tournament undefeated. Spike This, with team captain Kevin Glesler, came in second place.

ltsy Bitsy Spikers, headed by Stacy Laubacher, placed third and Morse Construction, with Eric Parker as captain, placed fourth in the tournament.
