Josh Reindel, David Eaton leagues’ best wrestlers

Cardinal Stritch wrestlers finished fifth in the OWL championship meet, and Northwood followed in sixth out of eight schools. McComb won with 117 points, followed by Cory-Rawson (101), Arcadia (92½), Van Buren (86½), Stritch (63), Northwood (48 ½), Stryker (45), and Toledo Christian (20).

Reindel (189) avenged a previous loss to Sonnenberg of Van Buren by winning a 6-4 decision and take the league’s top honor. Hineline pinned a Stryker grappler in 2:49.

“The rematch was a very anticipated match Both wrestlers are respectively ranked in the state in Division III (Reindel  ranked 7th) (Sonnenberg ranked 5th),” said Jimmy Reindel, Stritch assistant coach and Josh’s brother.

Josh is the career wins record holder at Cardinal Stritch (141-20). His current season record is 32-2

Northwood had two runner-ups in Lang (103) and Miller (171), and Stritch had two in Cunningham (135) and Peters (145).  Lang lost to Elchert (Arcadia) in a 6-0 championship decision; Cunningham lost to Osborn (McComb) in a technical fall, 18-3; Peters was pinned by Casdorph (McComb) in 5:46; and Miller was pinned by True (Arcadia) in 5:09

Northwood had three consolation champions and Stritch one. Northwood’s Mack (112) defeated Ward (Van Buren) 11-5; Ranger Mi. Schlichler defeated DeLaCerda (McComb) 4-2; and Ranger Grimm defeated Lake (Van Buren) 7-1. Stritch wrestler N. Wamer won an 8-3 decision over fourth place Ma. Schlichler of Northwood, 8-3. Stritch wrestler Szymanski was also fourth, losing the 171 consolation final to Barlekamp (Cory-Rawson), 6-1.

Eastwood’s string of five straight wrestling championships was broken by the Elmwood Royals in the SLL championship meet.

Elmwood had seven first place wrestlers, while Eastwood had five and Otsego and Woodmore each had one. Elmwood won with 213½ points, Eastwood followed with 207, followed by Genoa (125), Otsego (78), Gibsonburg (76½), Lakota (72), Woodmore (48), and Lake (45).

Eastwood’s champions were Tyler Hahn, who defeated Mitchell Emmitt (Elmwood) in the 125 pound championship 7-3; Eaton defeated Scott Traver (Genoa) 8-4; Seth Hoffman (160) defeated Shane Glenn (Otsego) in a major decision, 15-7; Ashton Brown (189) defeated runner-up Brandon Tantari (Lake) in a major decision 19-7; and Matt Schling (285) won a major decision over Travis Tahy (Elmwood), 15-7.

Woodmore wrestler Ben St. John pinned Jarrett Smith (Lakota) to win the 285 championship.

Second place qualifiers included Traver; Tantari; Eastwood wrestler Justin Burket, who was defeated by Kodie Glosser (Otsego) in the 112 championship; Genoa’s Devin Mazza (130) lost a major decision to Nic Hernandez (Elmwood), 13-4; Comet Troy Espinoza (140) lost to Cody Alexander (Elmwood) 5-3; Comet Taylor Schneider (145) lost to Tyler Baer (Elmwood) 8-5; Eastwood wrestler Alex Depew (152) lost to Alex Betts (Elmwood) 3-1; and Eagle Luke Eschenbrenner (171) lost to Jordan Ackley (Elmwood) in a 2-1 overtime decision.

Consolation champions included Lake wrestler Derek Carr (103), who pinned Eastwood grappler Johnny Shumay in 3:35 for third and fourth place; Comet Adam Klavinger (112) defeated Dexter Lee (Elmwood) 4-2 in overtime; Comet Shawn Gantka (119) defeated Ryan Widmer (Gibsonburg) 15-9; Golden Bear Damen Escobedo (125) pinned Josh Pierce (Genoa) in 4:37; Otsego’s Todd Box (130) defeated Eagle grappler Nick Mommers 5-3 in overtime; and at 135, Flyer Nick Espinoza defeated Jason Bonham (Elmwood) 3-0.

In other consolation finals, at 140, Casey Horn (Eastwood) pinned Levi Warfield (Lakota) in 2:06; 145, Alex Smith (Eastwood) defeated Neil Spanfellner (Gibsonburg) 10-9; 152, Gary Green (Gibsonburg) pinned Joey Braun (Woodmore) in 2:48; 160, Garrett Scott (Genoa) defeated Josh Wise (Elmwood) 11-9;  171, Chris Kloman (Lakota) pinned Jason Mercurio (Woodmore) in 2:48; 215, Chris Repp (Gibsonburg) defeated Jake Schreuder (Genoa) 2-1 in overtime; and at 285, Josh Proch (Eastwood) defeated Caleb D’Clute (Genoa) 3-2 in overtime.

Sports Announcements
Northwood t-ball, baseball, and softball registration will be Mar. 1 from 1:30-3 p.m. at the Josie Reinhart Community Center for boys and girls ages 5-14. Deadline is Mar. 1 at 3 p.m. Parents must accompany children and non-returnable copies of birth certificates are required. Fee is $30 with a maximum of $45 for two or more participants. Families that meet low-income requirements may obtain a fee waiver with request in writing. Umpires and coaches must also register.
