Veteran softball coach Joe Wyant doesn’t mince words when talking about his players.

Wyant, whose Eastwood squad finished 27-2 this season and won its second Northern Buckeye Conference title (13-1) in three years, speaks thusly about senior third baseman Cassidy Rolf:

Intense? Check.

Focused? Check.

Plays hard? Triple check.

“She plays like a guy would play — hard-nosed and intense,” Wyant said “She plays hard all the time.”

Rolf, who was named the NBC Offensive Player of the Year, shared team MVP honors with senior pitcher Sam Shirling. Rolf was also named to the All-Ohio second team in Division II.

The 5-foot-7 Rolf said she gets her competitive traits from her family, which includes her sister Courtney, a former Eagles softball standout, and her brother Clay, a fifth-year senior offensive lineman at Bowling Green State University.

“It’s definitely a family thing,” Cassidy said. “Ever since my sister and I were little, we would play with Clay and try to play his games. We tried to out-tough him. We did a couple times.”

Rolf, a four-year starter, earned second-team All-NBC honors last year, first-team honors as a sophomore and honorable mention status as a freshman. She helped the Eagles reach the D-III state semifinals a year ago.

“She’s a great kid,” Wyant said. “There’s no kid better and harder working than she is to be a good softball player. She was a leader of our team this year. She took over that role this year, being the team leader. She did everything. She led the team in hitting all four years.”

Rolf batted .485 this season, with 43 runs, 38 RBI, 13 doubles, three triples and a school-record six home runs. She holds eight career school records: on-base percentage (.538), runs (136), home runs (16), hits (166), triples (10), RBI (130), doubles (43) and stolen bases (30).

Asked which of those records means the most to her, Rolf responded, “All of them.”

“I didn’t know I set that many records,” she said, “Coach Wyant told me about one of them during the season. The rest, I had no idea. All of them are really cool.”

Rolf said being named to the All-Ohio squad this season came as a shock.

“I really wasn’t expecting that,” she said. “I didn’t think that was in my range. I never would have thought I would have gotten it this year. I didn’t want to focus on any of that (awards) stuff. Just play one game at a time and whatever happens, happens. I wanted to get some more home runs, but it didn’t happen. I had an OK season. I wish I could have done a lot better.”

The Eagles lost to Maumee, 10-6, in the D-II district semifinals, but they won 94 games in Rolf’s four-year career. Her senior season, she said, was special.

“I had a blast,” Rolf said. “They were like family to me. It was awesome coming to practice and having people with me who were ready to play. We were motivated.”

Rolf will play softball and study criminal justice at Owens Community College this fall.

“I would like to be a probation officer,” she said. “I want to help kids deal with their problems and overcome their situations.”

Wyant, who has been coaching softball for 16 years, doesn’t look forward to replacing Rolf next season.

“You’re not going to replace her,” Wyant said. “You don’t get players like her very often.”
