Mission accomplished for two local summer college baseball teams.

On July 25, the Ohio Monarchs Blue and Gold teams were picked to represent the Toledo Amateur Baseball Federation at the National Amateur Baseball Federation (NABF) College World Series in Toledo August 7-10.

“One of our goals at the beginning of the year was to make the post season (NABF CWS),” said Monarchs General Manager Steve Timofeev. “It was not important which team finished first or second, but to make post season. I am proud of both our teams for achieving this goal.

Only two games away from his 100th career victory, Genoa boys soccer coach Dave Bertz is stepping down.

"It was just time. Time to be grandpa," Bertz explains. "I thought about sticking around one more year and getting 100 wins and everything. You know, it would have been the wrong reason to stay. Had we won some games we should've won, I would have had it last year so it's my own fault. Tell you what, it was fun."

Bertz provided the foundation for a perennial championship program at Genoa, and leaves with 98 wins. Taking his place is Kenny Katschke, an assistant the last three years, a former travel coach, and the father of senior center-midfielder Cody Katschke.

Graytown resident Dorothy Gackstetter seems to make news a lot.

But face it, when someone like Gackstetter is post 70-years-old, competes in horse shows, and is a perennial champion in Senior Olympics events, maybe she deserves the attention.

Gackstetter has done it again, taking the Gold Medal in three events and the Silver in three others during the State Senior Olympics at Kettering Fairmont High School near Dayton on July 25. She is on her way to the National Senior Olympics next year in San Francisco.
