After losing scoring stars Amanda Watson and Ashley Cieselczyk to graduation following 2007, the defending Toledo City League champion Clay Lady Eagles soccer team was expected to be in a bit of a rebuilding mode this season.

Instead, the girls have stormed out of the gates soaring once again at 6-0-2 and already in great position to secure at least a share of a second consecutive league crown.

Considering the back-to-back games Clay’s football team endured on Aug. 29 and Sept. 5, Coach Mike Donnelly admitted he and his squad could use an old-fashioned blowout victory.

"It would help,” Donnelly said. “I know mentally we’re a little tired and we have some people who are nicked up. If we could get a break, we would welcome it, but we don’t get it in the first six weeks. We just have to keep plugging away.”

Corey Bettenbrock (Eastwood) began his college football career Saturday as his 16th-ranked Division III Ohio Northern University Polar Bears opened the season under fifth-year head coach Dean Paul Saturday, September 13 at eighth-ranked North Central (Ill.).

Bettenbrock is a freshman majoring in manufacturing technology at ONU and is the son of Beth McCowin and Thomas Bettenbrock, both of Pemberville.
