The Clay boys soccer team’s Sept. 30 City League match-up against St. John’s Jesuit will be a big – and telling – test for the veteran Eagles, according to first-year coach Richard Parrish.

“If we come away from St. John’s with a ‘W,’ I think we can go a long way in the playoffs,” Parrish said. “St. John’s is probably in the top three in the area.”

Led by senior forward Ricky Dempsey, Clay has gotten through a difficult early-season schedule with a 3-2-3 record despite missing one of its top players for all but one match.

Waite’s historic football tradition continues to be documented in literature and art.

In the lobby of the historic Weber Block Building, a decades-old painting depicts a football game played at the Waite Bowl, a stadium said to seat 20,000 located where the baseball field and Mollenkopf Stadium are now located.  

Waite’s football teams at one time traveled by train across the country, taking faculty members with them. After defeating Miami Senior (Fla.), the “Champions of the South,” 14-7, for a mythical national championship in 1932, the Waite “Purple Hurricanes” received an invitation to the White House.

Genoa will induct five individuals and two teams into its athletic hall of fame at the football game October 25. Inductees include—

Alex Quinones (1979) — wrestling — 1979 SLL champion, sectional and district champ, Third Team All-Ohio. Quinones had a career record of 62-9.

Robert M. Tank (1941) — community award — 3-year football lettermen, team captain, 1940. Tank was a U.S. Air Force (1943-45) B-24 commander with 30 missions, based in Italy. He is the owner of Tank Motor Sales, retired in 1981. Tank established two scholarships at GHS and is a charter member of the Genoa Area Education Foundation.
