Eastwood golfer Alyssa Shimel advanced to the state golf tournament for the first time since her freshman season by shooting a 75 at the Division II district tournament at Sycamore Springs Golf Course near Arlington

As a team, Eastwood finished fifth — two spots out of the loop to qualify as a team for state. Eastwood’s score of 381 was behind Edison (389), Huron (371), and Lima Shawnee (379), and Delphos St. John’s (380). Cardinal Stritch finished 14th at district with a score of 444.

The Eastwood girls advanced to district after finishing second at the Green Hills sectional near Clyde, thanks again to Shimel. Eastwood had a score of 404 to finish behind sectional champion Huron. Eagle players advancing are Alyssa Shimel 75, MIkayla Young 101, Hailey Bess 108, and Delaney Gentry 120.

It’s been 21 Comet football seasons since that “Voice of the Genoa Comets,” John “Jack” Werner, remained at his post high above Bergman Field.

At Comet Stadium during Genoa’s win over Lakota, he stepped back to don his maroon cape in the form of a fading, well-worn Comets T-shirt one more time.

“It was at the first game against Mohawk this season that I was first approached by Superintendent Dennis Mock about possibly calling this game,” reflected the 85-year-old.

Few Genoa sports fans will anytime soon forget recently-graduated Comets’ softball player Lydia Eckel.

An unstoppable offensive juggernaut in the coveted number three spot in the batting order, the First Team All-Suburban Lakes League, All-District, Second Team All-Ohio performer, the Lady Comets’ all-time batting champion (tied with Delaney Talmage for most career home runs), just signed on to play softball for Owens College.

“I’m very honored,” offers the former Comet

She’ll take to Owens her team-leading .408 batting average and three home runs from her senior season at Genoa, for Coach Duane Lanham at the next level.
