Northwood senior two-way tackle Charles Artino had his first Friday night off in nearly three months this week.

He would rather have been on the football field with his Rangers teammates, playing in the Division V state playoffs. Northwood, however, missed out on a playoff berth despite rolling through the Toledo Area Athletic Conference and posting a 9-1 record.

"I miss football already," said the 260-pound Artino, one of four Northwood captains. "I miss the whole concept of football and playing under the lights. I miss playing with my teammates. I miss doing something I love. It's been real special. I've been playing with all those guys since fourth grade and I'm not going to be able to play with them anymore. I'm going to miss that."

A 6-0, 200 pound former right guard, turned starting center, turned backup quarterback/free safety, on defense this season Michael Fahle became Woodmore’s team leader in tackles at outside linebacker.

But on offense this year the wide receiver turned starting quarterback was even chosen Homecoming King.

Alongside cousin Kaylee Paul, who was crowned queen, that may have made his Wildcat teammates accept him as their unquestionable leader every Friday evening, despite Woodmore’s 2-8 final record.

Eastwood senior defender Crosby Schemenauer and Lake sophomore attacker Drew Plummer have each been selected as Player of the Year for Suburban Lakes League boys and girls soccer.

Eastwood won the SLL boys championship, but was defeated by Sandusky Perkins in the Division II district final after defeating Central Catholic, 2-1, in the semifinal. Lake was to play Ottawa Hills Saturday in the Division III regional final at Findlay.

Final boys’ league standings were — Eastwood 5-0-3, Genoa 5-1-2, Lake 4-3-1, Otsego 2-4-2, Woodmore 0-8.
