University of Toledo sophomore Brittany Teneyck (Lake) and freshman Alison Zsigray (Clay) are contributing points for the Rockets swimming and diving team.

In the Rockets win over the Oakland Grizzlies, 170½ -122½, Toledo had first-place finishers in 10 of the 16 events, including Tenecyk. On the diving boards, Teneyck finished second on both the one- and three-meter boards, scoring 246.23 in the one meter and tallying 244.20 in the three meter.

"Overall, I am pretty pleased with our performance," Coach Lars Jorgensen said. "Oakland is a good program so this was a good win for us and a great way to start the season. I was really pleased with some of our freshmen, coming out in their first meet as a Rocket, really emerging and doing a good job."

Is there anyone out there who is a prep basketball fan who can say a girls team with a front line of 6-3, 6-2, and 6-2 won’t be competitive?

The Waite girls return 6-3 junior forward Natasha Howard, and add to the mix 6-2 sophomore center Shanice McNeal and 6-2 junior forward Amanda Gregory.

In turn, Waite was picked to win a City title. Coach Manny May believes a decrease in mistakes and turnovers could spell the difference by the time the season reaches its prime.

“We had quite a few last year but we had fewer at the end of the season. We lived with some young mistakes last year,” May said.

Outside of the top 15 sporting events of 2008, there’s plenty more to remember, including (in alphabetical order):

• Cardinal Stritch girls’ basketball win third TAAC championship in five years as Coach Gary Lemle gets Coach of the Year.
• Cardinal Stritch golfer Torey Brummett is named Toledo Area Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the third straight season after shooting a 68 at Detwiler. Waite senior golfer Tom Duris is named City League Player of the Year for the second straight season, but both golfers narrowly miss qualifying for the state golf meet. Lake golfer Matt Smith is named SLL Golfer of the Year. Another Waite athlete, Jeff Brown, advanced to the City League championship in first singles tennis, losing in the final.
