Eastwood's softball team finished with 18 wins and took third in the Suburban Lakes League last season, and with nine returning letter winners from that team, second-year coach Joe Wyant had a good feeling about his 2009 squad.

"We knew we would be pretty good because of last year," Wyant said. "Our goal was to win the league and go farther in the tournament. That (tournament run) didn't happen, but it only takes one bad game in the tournament."

The Eagles accomplished one of their goals this season by going 12-2 in the league and capturing the school's first SLL championship.

Eastwood, which fielded its first softball team in 1993, finished the season with a 21-5 record, losing only to Gibsonburg and Elmwood in league play.

Genoa and Eastwood weren't going to sneak up on anyone in the Suburban Lakes League baseball race this season.

The Comets certainly didn't.

Coach Dan Thompson's squad went 22-5 and rolled to a 14-0 league finish to win the school's third SLL title in four years. Genoa and Eastwood were picked to tie for the championship in 2009, but the Eagles ended up 15-8 and 10-4 in the SLL.

"We set a team record this year for runs scored and we hit the ball very well," Thompson said. "We felt we had a lineup, one through nine, where we could score runs. If anyone was in a slump, there was somebody who was coming out of a slump. We were a very balanced team this year."

Bluffton University baseball player Cody McPherson (Lake) has been recognized by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference as a member of the league’s All-Academic Team. To receive the honor, an athlete must have completed a full year at the institution, be a varsity athlete and carry a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 through the semester preceding the end of the season.
