Eastwood’s boys and girls track teams swept the Suburban Lakes League meets at Woodmore High School.

The Eagle boys scored 153 points, and were followed by Woodmore (145), Elmwood (92), Lakota (87), Otsego (61), Genoa (51), Lake (48), and Gibsonburg (24).

Eastwood champions included junior Justin Welch, shot put (61-1¾), a new league record; and both Welch and Marcus Vicars broke the old league record in the discus, but Welch was champion with a toss of 198-5 and Vicars followed at 171. Eastwood senior Crosby Schemenauer also set a meet record in the pole vault (15-1).

Senior Kyle Gunn won three events as the Northwood boys were runner-up at the Toledo Area Athletic Conference track meet last week, following Toledo Christian (187) with 129½) points.

Following the Rangers were Ottawa Hills (101), Cardinal Stritch (51), Maumee Valley (16½), Danbury (11), and Emmanuel Christian (3).

Gunn won the 100 (11.2), 200 (22.4), and high jump (6-2). Other Northwood winners were the 4x200 relay team of sophomore Seth Dunbar, senior Chris Keith, senior Spencer Guerrero, and junior Brad Minkowski (1:34.8); Chris Keith, 400 (51.7);  Spencer Guerrero, 300 hurdles (41.9); and junior Andrew Pietras, discus (136-5).

Greg Wilker will be the first to tell you that this isn't nearly the best defensive team he's had in 25 years as Lake High School's baseball coach.

He doesn't have a hulking, overpowering pitcher, either.

What Wilker and the Flyers do have, however, are three of the best hurlers in the Suburban Lakes League in juniors Ryan Hotmer and Brandon Maze and sophomore Casey Witt.

Hotmer, who was 3-2 with a 1.63 ERA last season, is considered the staff ace.

"He's a bigger kid, so he throws the hardest out of the group and he has the best breaking ball," Wilker said. "He's been nicked up all year because of injuries. He's thrown in our toughest games."
