The International Boxing Club has announced its 11th Anniversary Party. The IBC, which is under the direction of its founder, East Toledo native Harry E. Cummins III, first opened their doors on June 1, 1998.

The mission of the IBC is to "empower youth in the Greater Toledo Area to succeed in life". To accomplish its mission, Cummins says the IBC uses the platform of amateur boxing to reach underserved youth who are at-risk for academic failure, gang involvement, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, suicide and other destructive behaviors.

IBC has provided after school programs that focus on academic, cultural, social and recreational learning opportunities to more than 3,000 youth since its incorporation in 1998.

Sami Michaelis was a freshman pitcher when she took the mound for Woodmore against Suburban Lakes League rival Elmwood three years ago.

Michaelis pitched five innings in that game as the Wildcats got shellacked 21-1. Woodmore's freshman softball class would go 0-for-8 against the Royals over a four-season span - until May 21.

"That was very satisfying," said Michaelis, now a 5-7 senior and the Suburban Lakes League Player of the Year. "The fact that we were 0-and-8 against them, to finally get our first win against them in the district finals ... that was huge."

Four days later the Eagles bounced back - barely - with a 6-5 win over that same St. John's team in the City League tournament semifinals.

"The game of baseball, it’s a funny game," said Knierim, Clay's 13th-year coach. "One day you can be like we were on Thursday, when we had two hits, and you can come out the next day and pound the ball all over the park. We had been hitting the ball all over the place, so I wasn't too concerned about that."
