The Senior Night atmosphere in the Otsego High School gymnasium Tuesday night was electric, and the host Knights showed everyone why they were the huge favorites to repeat as volleyball champions of the Suburban Lakes League.

The Knights rolled past Eastwood in three games and could claim the SLL title with a win over Elmwood on Thursday. But here's the catch: first-year coach Jeff Beck and Eastwood only needed to defeat Lake on Thursday to share the league championship with Otsego.

Not bad, considering the Eagles were 12-10 last year and have just one senior on their roster. Eastwood last won an SLL title in 2005.

"The loss did not take away from what we have accomplished this year," said Beck, the former coach at Perrysburg.

Entering this week, the Eagles were ranked 19th in the Division II state coaches poll. They took an 18-2 overall record and 10-0 SLL mark into Tuesday's match at Otsego, which lost to Eastwood in five games earlier this season.

Kaysie Brittenham stands out among a talented junior class at Lake H.S.

“She is the most modest and humble student-athlete that I have ever come across,” said Melissa Conley, Lake’s head volleyball coach.

Conley said that it is Brittenham’s drive and enthusiasm for both athletics and academics that separates her from the average student-athlete.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kid as driven as Kaysie,” she said.

The three-sport athlete is currently leading the Lady Flyer volleyball team into sectional play while also preparing her favorite sport – basketball.

Conley understands where Kaysie’s heart lies. That doesn’t stop her appreciation of the junior outside hitter.

“I know that this isn’t her sport of choice,” Conley said. “However, if she can do this in volleyball, I want to see what she can do in basketball.”

In April, before the Major League Baseball season started, a young, handsome, talented Press reporter wrote, “I don’t think Detroit is ready to win the World Series yet, but I think they will surprise some people and compete for the Central Crown. My fearless prediction was finishing 86-76 and falling out of the wild card race at the end of the year.”

I was alone in having this much faith in the Tigers. The Indians and Twins were the favored teams in the Central. But, fast forward 162 games and 6 grueling months and the Tigers had 86 wins and were playing the Minnesota Twins in a one game playoff to see who would face the New York Yankees in the playoffs. If only Nostradamus was watching. What are the odds of picking the exact win total during a 162 games season?

So, there I was watching that Tigers-Twins game, my palms sweating as the season came down to one closely contested extra-inning baseball game. It was the most I’ve ever hated to be right.
