Denny Meyer doesn't have a lot to complain about these days.

The second-year Lake girls’ basketball coach, whose team is ranked eighth in this week's Division III state poll, has the Flyers off to a 13-0 start.

Meyer is also a proud papa. His daughter Kimberly is a starting senior guard and leads Lake in assists with 3.3 per game. Meyer's daughter Michelle coaches the Flyers' 13-0 junior varsity team, and his daughter Stephanie has coached the seventh grade team to a 12-0 mark.

Denny Meyer is proud for another reason: his team's unselfish play.

"I like their work ethic and how unselfish they are," he said. "We have a lot of older people from our community come to our games and they'll come up and tell me that's what they like about our team. They say that's how it was when they were growing up, that teams were so unselfish. That shows in our scoring, how we can have a different leading scorer every night."

The Flyers are averaging 54 points a game, but that number is somewhat skewed because they usually have such a big lead in the fourth quarter that Lake's reserves get lots of playing time.

The Flyers gave up 23 points against Swanton on Tuesday and allowed 24 against Elmwood on Jan. 21. Gibsonburg managed 30 points against Lake on Jan. 18, and in the biggest game of the Suburban Lakes League season to date, Genoa committed 27 turnovers in a 51-40 loss at Lake on Jan. 15.

"I want to do sports broadcasting," Bergman said, "or even more of a dream job would be acting in TV or movies."

Becoming the next Robert Pattinson or Seth Rogan will have to wait, because Bergman, a two-time state wrestling champion at Oak Harbor High School, is busy chasing his dream of competing at the 2012 Olympics in London.

"I want to make the Olympic team and ultimately win a gold medal," Bergman said. "My short-term goals are to make the 2010 World Team and the 2011 World Team. I'm going to Turkey, Iran, Russia, and Belarus in the next two months and I plan on winning all those tournaments.

"I plan on being the No. 1 guy in our country. Only one guy at each weight gets to compete at the World Championships. Right now I'm ranked third because I got third at the World Team Trials last June."

The 6-2 Bergman, 25, who has been wrestling for 15 years, competes internationally in the 96 kg weight class (211.5 pounds).

Many coaches will tell you the signs of success are not necessarily displayed in

wins and losses, but in how a team has improved over the course of a season.

The Lake Flyers were 3-9 overall, 1-5 in the Suburban Lakes League heading into the Jan. 28 conference game at Elmwood. That virtually puts them out of the league race nearly halfway through the season.

However, in Lake’s last two league games the Flyers had a chance to defeat two of the SLL’s top contenders.

At Eastwood (7-4, 5-1), Lake had the lead with three minutes to go. But a Flyer turnover translated into a 3-point play at Eastwood’s end, and the Eagles took a two-point lead. Lake did get a couple more chances with the basketball.

“We had two good 3-point looks, and we could not knock either one of them down,” second-year coach James Scharer said.

Down 39-37 with six seconds to go, Lake was forced to foul and the Eagles closed the deal to take a 41-37 victory.

Three days later at Genoa, Lake came back from 18 points down to pull to within three with 32 seconds remaining. Yet, the Comets came away with a 57-51 victory.
