Defiance College baseball player Alex Timofeev (Clay) earned his first All-HCAC award, after being tabbed as an Honorable Mention selection while playing first base during his junior year.

The Oregon native developed into one of Defiance’s top offensive weapons and ended the year with a .336 batting average, .385 on-base percentage, .482 slugging percentage, eight doubles, two home runs and 27 runs batted in. Timofeev set new career highs in nearly every offensive category and did his best work in non-conference action, where he led the Yellow Jackets with a .432 average, .463 on-base clip, .595 slugging percentage and sparkling 1.058 OPS. Timofeev has a .308 collegiate career batting average as a junior with one more year to play.

Timofeev was starting first baseman of the 2007 Clay Eagles baseball program that made a run at the state tournament.

He played for the Ohio Monarchs summer collegiate program for the past two season and will compete again this summer in his final season.

Owens Community College women’s basketball student-athlete Sarah Clark of Delphos will sign a national letter of intent to continue her collegiate career at the University of Toledo on Thursday, May 20. The official signing ceremony will take place in the College’s Student Health and Activities Center at 4:30 p.m.

During her career at Owens, Clark averaged 11.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game for the Express. This past year, the sophomore guard/forward earned Second Team OCCAC All-Conference honors and was named the team’s Mark Henry Award recipient. Additionally, Clark, a 2008 graduate of Delphos St. John’s High School, was a NJCAA Division II Pre-Season All-American Second Team selection.

Led by Head Coach Michael Llanas, the Express women’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 campaign with a 27-6 overall record and an 11-3 mark (second place) in the OCCAC regular season standings. Owens lost to Schoolcraft College in the finals of the NJCAA Region XII Championships.

The Express was ranked No. 6 in the final NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball poll. The University of Toledo Rockets finished their 2009-10 season with a 25-9 overall record.

Owens’s Tim Decant is coming off a solid sophomore and final season at Owens, but he doesn’t have a home for next year.

The 2008 Lake graduate hit .392 this year for the Express while helping to lead the team to a 35-20 record. He also had a .476 on base percentage to go along with five home runs, 43 rbi’s and 19 stolen bases.

Decant worked to improve his hitting to the opposite field this season. While he hit .379 last year, he felt the need to get better.

“Anyone that has ever played with me or coached me can tell you that I pull the ball, but when it comes to driving the ball to the opposite field, that’s something I definitely need to work on.”

Therefore, Decant said that his hitting coach at Owens, Tom DeMarco, spent hours throwing with him in batting practice on balls on the outer part of the plate so he could get used to driving the ball to the opposite part of the field.

“It helped me individually with my swing and ultimately helped me to stay much more consistent at the plate.”

It was consistency that the right handed hitter focused on this year. He felt like he had too many slumps last year.
