Oregon resident Jodi Woessner charged into the record books at the 2010 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships, crushing the all-time mark for all-events and tying the record for three-game series.

Woessner graduated from Lake High School in 1988, according to Northwood resident Rick Radocy, publisher of The Sport bowling newspaper. Radocy says her family owned Deshler Lanes, an eight-alley bowling center in Deshler, Ohio, which is where she honed her skills as a youth. She is an exempt bowler in the PBA women’s series, meaning she no longer has to qualify for national tournaments through regional events.

According to www.TeamUSAShop.com, at the U.S. Bowling Congress championships, Woessner had a scratch all-events total of 2,330, an average of 258.8 for nine games, at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center to beat the previous record of 2,231 set by Leanne Hulsenburg in 2005.

The Toledo Area Athletic Conference baseball coaches voted Andrew Pinciotti as the best center fielder in the conference last season.

So when Andrew graduated from Cardinal Stritch last June, guess who got tabbed to take over his spot in center for the 2010 season. Gabe Pinciotti, Andrew's younger brother.

Gabe, a senior, played left field as a junior and earned honorable mention All-TAAC honors. He said he felt “a lot of pressure” following his brother as the Cardinals' center fielder.

“Andrew was good,” Gabe said. “He could cover a lot of ground and make some catches I know I couldn't have. It's your big brother; you've got to fill his shoes. We're pretty close. We're both usually pretty positive and not dogging on each other.”

Across Ohio, 776 prep baseball teams are striving to accomplish what Pemberville High School was able to achieve in 1939 — win a state championship.

Pemberville historian Dale Bruning can account for four members of that team who remain alive today, including then-sophomore outfielder Tom Bowlus, now a retired medical doctor, and senior catcher Donnan Marten, now an 88-year-old Bowling Green resident.

In 1939, Pemberville concluded a 25-1 season under the direction of Coach John F. Huebner by defeating Lockbourne Hamilton 8-6 in the Class B (small school) state final on the campus of Ohio State University.

It remains the only prep state baseball championship won by a school that eventually consolidated into the Eastwood district, and was also Wood County’s first state title.
