Sarah Muncey

Missing the bulk of her senior season with the Genoa softball team wasn't what senior right-hander Sarah Muncey had in mind in 2010.

Muncey was coming off a junior season in which she posted a 13-6 record with a 1.76 ERA and was named second-team All-Suburban Lakes League and second-team all-district.

When the Comets played in Florida during spring break in late March, however, she took the mound and started feeling serious discomfort in her right side.

“I went to the hospital when we came back and they said it was inflamed,” Muncey recalled. “It hurt, but it wasn't unbearable and I kept throwing. I did everything I could - therapy, medicine. When I'd throw, I'd wear a strap around my ribs, but it came to the point I just couldn't do it. It was a piercing pain.”

Muncey was diagnosed with an inflamed rib cartilage tear on her right side.

Winckowski leads Erskine to NCAA Southeast Regional
Former Clay and Owens Community College baseball player Casey Winckowski is playing for Erskine College in South Carolina, which qualified for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional as the sixth seed.

The 17th ranked Flying Fleet’s post season run ended after losing to fourth-ranked Columbus State 8-7 in an elimination game.  Winckowski played his part in the final game, helping Erskine get off to a good start.

In the bottom of the second inning, Erskine’s Luke Danielewicz would hit a one out double down the line and then score on a single by Zach McCarthy. Winckowski would then double down the left field line and an error by the Cougar left fielder would allow McCarthy to score and Winckowski to advance to third.

Winckowski’s teammate, Matt Youngblood, would then lift a fly ball into right center field allowing Winckowski to tag up and slide in ahead of the throw from the outfield to give Erskine the 3-0 lead. The Fleet lead would be short lived as the Cougars would respond to take the victory and advance.
