More than 24 hours after he had earned three medals at the Division III state track and field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Woodmore senior Brock Avers was still on cloud nine.

“I'm just so happy,” Avers said. “I never dreamed about going down there in three events and placing. I'm just speechless. I can't believe I'm done with track.”

Avers placed sixth in the 800 meters and helped the Wildcats' 4x800 and 4x400 relays place sixth and seventh, respectively, in Columbus. Woodmore junior Carly Pendleton placed second in the discus in the Division III girls meet.

Woodmore's 4x800 relay team of junior Grant Weirich and seniors DeVaughnte Askew, Avers and Justin Garver qualified to the state meet in 8:06.88. The foursome, however, turned in a season-best time of 8:02.47 to finish sixth in Columbus.

Askew, Avers, Weirich and Garver – running in that order – placed seventh in the 4x400 in a school-record time of 3:24.20. Their state-qualifying time was 3:25.21.

“My main expectation was to go down there and run my best,” Askew said. “Being a senior, I wanted to end on a good note. We wanted to get on the podium. One of the best things about going to state is that you're running against the top 1 percent of all the teams from Ohio. We had three returners (in the 4x800) from last year, and Grant did really good running 800s.

Back in the days of the Lakeshore Conference and the Michigan-Ohio Border Conference, Northwood was as much a small school baseball power as Clay was a big-school power then and today.

Granted, in 1989, the Rangers shared with Genoa and Eastwood their last league championship when Northwood was a member of the Suburban Lakes League.

This year, the Rangers came full circle and won the school’s first outright Toledo Area Athletic League baseball championship. Northwood is not just a football school, anymore.

Coach Dave Russell led Northwood to a 17-9 overall record and 11-1 in the TAAC. For his efforts, The Press is naming him the Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press Coach of the Year.

Northwood junior left-hander Cameron Juhasz (6-3) pitched a three-hit, nine-strikeout gem in Northwood's 2-1 over Toledo Christian, coached by Oregon resident and former Major League pitcher Ron Rightnowar, on April 22 to win the outright title. Juhasz is an Alan Miller Jewelers First Team All-Press selection.

Derrick Vicars figured he had a chance to become a national champion in the discus, but he knew Mother Nature had to lend a helping hand.

Vicars, a 2008 graduate of Genoa High School who is now a member of the University of Findlay track and field team, had the 11th-best qualifying throw heading into the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C.

“It depended on the weather,” said Vicars, 21, a sophomore majoring in education at UF. “It actually worked out. We threw in bad weather all year and all those other guys had their PRs in good weather and really good wind. In discus, there is a certain wind you want. We had a lot of rain this year and I figured if we had not-so-good weather, I would have a really good shot. Guys in Texas aren't used to rain or having good winds all the time.”

On May 29, after bad weather had postponed the meet, Vicars threw the shot 173 feet, 1 inch (52.77 meters) to become the national Division II outdoor discus champion. Vicars placed 14th at the NCAA championships last year.

This year's runner-up was James Coleman, a freshman from Missouri Southern, with a throw of 172-3 (52.54 meters).

The 6-1, 240-pound Vicars, who had thrown more than 176 feet earlier this season at a meet in Tennessee, competed in the first of two discus flights at the NCAA championships.
