Two-time state discus champion and Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record-holder Justin Welch is not the only thrower from Eastwood who is competing at a high level.

Carnegie-Mellon sophomore thrower Anthony “Alex” Hernandez, an Eastwood grad, is a top thrower in three events with that college’s track and field team. Right now he is following in the footsteps of C-M school record holder James Hulley, a senior from Massachusetts.

As a freshman, Hernandez was named was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men’s Outdoor Rookie of the Year by the track and field coaches association.  The honors come after the Tartans placed second at the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Hernandez claimed the UAA title in the hammer throw with a distance of 48.75 meters.  The freshman also placed sixth in the discus throwing 38.03 meters.  Hernandez became the third men’s track and field outdoor rookie of the year honoree and second in three years

Hernandez’s top outdoor shot put is 11.51 at Washington & Jefferson, his top discus throw is 39.62 Washington and Lee), and his top hammer throw is 49.17 at the Carnegie Mellon Tri Meet.  He finished third in the discus throw and first in the hammer throw at the UAA Championships.

The 2009 track season didn't end the way Cody Seifert and Nick Twining envisioned.

Seifert, then a junior at Eastwood, qualified to the Division II state meet in the 100-meter dash and the 4x100 relay. He pulled his hamstring in the 100 preliminary race, and the Eagles went on to capture the state title without him.

Twining, now a junior at Eastwood, suffered a stress fracture in his foot after last year's district meet, so his doctor told him to shut it down to avoid further damage.

“I was disappointed,” recalled Twining, an 800-meter specialist. “I had the same chance as this year, going to state. I was really upset watching my teammates participate last year and end up winning, and I didn't have anything to do with it. It was frustrating.”

Seifert and Twining had a lot to do with coach Gary White's Eagles repeating as Division II champs June 4-5 at the state meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

Sometimes it's easier to accomplish a goal when you've already pictured it happening in your head.

Eastwood senior Justin Welch can vouch for that.

At last Saturday's Division II state track and field meet in Columbus, Welch had one more attempt in the shot put for a chance to beat two-time defending state champion Matthew Hoty of Sandusky Perkins.

“I was pretty calm,” Welch said. “I kind of just had a feeling I was going to be able to pull it out. I had a little smile on my face that I was going to beat him. I was going through the meet the night before and how it would go, that I would be in first place in the prelims and two people would go ahead of me and I would win it on the last throw.

“I always liked having it come down to my last throw. There have been some other meets where I would pull out a big throw on my last one. I was hoping for it to be like that.”

Welch, who had already won his third straight state discus title with a meet-record throw of 197-1, watched as Hoty broke his own meet record in the shot (62-9.75) on his final attempt. The 6-2, 210-pound Welch had the next throw, his final one, in what proved to be a do-or-die situation.
