Since 1972-73, 10 different schools have competed for the Suburban Lakes League championships. This upcoming school year will be the final year.

At every school, there have been championship teams. Almost every community believes it’s high school students can compete with other schools, even when their community’s school has a smaller enrollment.

Take Rossford, for instance. Rossford dominated in the Northern Lakes League in the late 1960s when Eastwood, Lake, Genoa, and Elmwood were members. It was a smaller school in the league then, but today it is a much smaller school than growing enrollments at Perrysburg, Sylvania, Anthony Wayne, and Springfield.

If you asked a Rossford old-school resident why the school remains in the NLL, when many of its team struggle year after year, they will deny the school is not competing. Granted, certain classes win championships, especially in sports where enrollment and depth is not a significant factor. But over time, high school students are high school students, no matter where you go, and it shows when you average out the numbers.

In its 25th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade

      Justin Welch

Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Justin Welch of Eastwood High School as its 2009-10 Gatorade Ohio Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Welch is the first Gatorade Ohio Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year to be chosen from Eastwood High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track, distinguishes Welch as Ohio’s best high school boys’ track and field athlete.

Now a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year award, Welch joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Ryan Hall (1999-01, Big Bear High School, Calif.), Meb Keflezighi (1993-94, San Diego, Calif.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo, Mich.), Candace Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central, Ill.), Kevin Garnett (1992-93, Maudlin, S.C.), Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Lolo Jones (1997-98, Roosevelt, Ia.).

It makes sense that when you have alumnus coaching high school sports, that coach has to be committed to the program.

At one point, Lake High School had eight boys basketball coaches over a span of 10 years. Now, Lake is banking that the recent hiring of boys basketball coach Ryan Bowen, a 1992 alumnus and owner of Ryan’s Barber Shop in Millbury, will pay off.

“It’s been a roller coaster. The seniors this year, I think I’m their third or fourth coach since they’ve been freshmen in high school, maybe. So, my thing is to build a solid program. I’m going to start young, hopefully see all those kids through,” Bowen said.

“Some guys will get their first-year job looking to go bigger. I don’t want to go anywhere. I’ve owned this business here, and I’ve been here for 16 years. This is the job I want. I don’t want another job.”

Lake has found success with football coach Bob Abbey — also a Lake alumnus.

“It’s fun talking to Bob because that was his dream job. Plus, I don’t want to say coaches don’t work hard, because we all do, but when you’re an alumnus, you get your roots put in there and you work a little harder because of that,” Bowen said.
