The Genoa Comets Athletic Boosters, a volunteer organization for Genoa Area Local Schools, announcedpic-GoalPostGala2 the success of their Eighth Annual Goal Post Gala Fundraiser.

This year’s event was held on August 6 at Sunrise Banquet Center in Millbury. The annual fundraiser raises money to assist in the payment and continued enhancement of the field and stadium in their new location. The total amount raised this year was $23,649.71.

“It is only possible to achieve this level of success due to the generous donations of local businesses and individuals,” stated a press release.

The day’s event included a morning golf outing and evening festivities including a reverse raffle, an electronics raffle, 50/50 cash drawings, silent auction tables, and several live auctions.

“One live auction, ‘The Game Day Experience’ which includes eating with the football team and coaches, sitting in on pre-game team meeting, watching video, observing warm-ups, back to the locker room, on the field and ending with a postgame, made a tremendous impact on the event and the community,” the release continued. “This priceless live auction item sold to the highest bidder, Leann Duffendock.”

The Lake-Northwood football game is a natural rivalry as they are only a few miles from each other.

This year, however, while it’s still a rivalry – things are different.  “In a strange way, despite our rivalry, we’re kind of close,” said Northwood football coach Ken James in early June.

The school’s football field, Flyer Stadium suffered heavy damage from a June 5 tornado.

After the tornado hit Lake and the surrounding community, Northwood’s football team was out helping the Lake community rebuild.

“We felt bad,” James said. “The kids were eager to help because if the tornado turns two miles north, we’re in their situation.”

In the aftermath of the tornado, Lake has a brand new turf football field, and they will christen their new field against the Rangers on Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.

“It’s a heck of a facility,” said Lake head football coach Bob Abbey.

Matt Yunker is the community outreach coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, and he's also a 1999 graduate of Swanton High School.

The Swanton community, and nearby Delta, suffered heavy damage on June 5, the same night a tornado ripped through Millbury and destroyed homes and left Lake High School in ruins.

“When I went back home to Swanton the following weekend after those storms happened, you see that stuff and you think those are the types of things you only see in movies,” Yunker said. “To see it in person was extremely eye-opening. People had mentioned that Lake High School was heavily impacted. I did some research the next day, and from going online and watching the national news that the school was flattened, that's when I realized how bad it was.”

When he returned to Cleveland, Yunker told fellow Browns employees how the tornado had affected his hometown as well as Millbury and, in particular, Lake High School.

“I told them what happened and I asked what could we think about doing and to keep in the back of their mind that the school was destroyed,” Yunker said. “I wanted us to keep these kids in mind. At that point, it just snowballed.”

For starters, several Browns players, who wish to remain anonymous, donated several pairs of cleats to the Lake football team. The Browns organization also donated Under Armour practice pants and T-shirts.

Yunker said his jaw nearly dropped when he visited Millbury to drop off the equipment and meet with Lake's football squad.
