Former Ohio University volleyball standout Ellen Herman has signed a contract to play professional volleyball with VT Aurubis Hamburg, a member of Germany’s 14-team premier league, the Bundesliga.

Herman is an Oregon native who attended high school at Central Catholic.

"I am eagerly awaiting my departure to Germany," Herman said. "It has been my dream to play professional volleyball ever since I can remember and now I can make that dream come true. Not only am I excited to play at a high level of competition, but I cannot wait to immerse myself in the culture and experience life on an international level."

At Ohio, Herman was a part of three Mid-American Conference regular season championships, three MAC tournament championships and four NCAA tournament berths. This past season, she helped the Bobcats reach the NCAA second round with a win over Notre Dame.

“It was an honor to coach Ellen,” Coach Ryan Theis said. “She was not only a difference- maker on the court, breaking almost every record in Ohio and MAC history, but she meant even more to this program and the Ohio volleyball family off the court. Her personality brought the community closer to our program and her work ethic, along with her effort, inspired teammates and fans. She exemplified what it means to be an All-American.”

wood bat summer college Cape Cod League All-Star Team.

Achter, who is currently fifth in the league with a 1.00 ERA, represented the West Division in the annual Cape Cod League All-Star Game July 28 at Fenway Park. The game was televised live on CBS College Sports.

Playing for the Cotuit Kettleers, Achter has proven to be one of the premier pitchers in the most prestigious collegiate summer league in the country. In 11 appearances and 27 innings pitched, Achter has only allowed three earned runs while striking out 23 batters. He owns a 2-2 record and has recorded three saves.

Achter, who was drafted in the 46th round of the 2010 MLB Draft by Minnesota but has elected to pitch for MSU his senior season, is the only Big Ten player to be selected to the 2010 Cape Cod League All-Star Team.

The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for Erin Pendleton.

The Woodmore High School graduate, who will be a sophomore at the University of Michigan this fall, took second place in the discus on July 22 at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada.

“I was very happy,” Pendleton said. “Coming into the meet I had the third farthest throw, so I finished higher than I came in. I wanted to get a medal really bad. I came in and got all my goals and I threw really, really well. There was nothing to be disappointed about.”

The runner-up finish earned the 19-year-old Pendleton her second medal in international discus competition. She earned a bronze medal last year at the Pan Am Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

On June 25, she won the discus event at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. On June 9, Pendleton placed 12th at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
