Genoa, Waite set for rematch at Mollenkopf Stadium

Genoa and Waite are football teams currently both in very different places.

The Comets have established themselves as one of the state’s best programs over the last seven years. The Indians, meanwhile, are looking to find success.

Both teams have a first-year head coach taking charge this year, and Waite’s Dan Chipka wants to turn things around immediately. He says his team will have its cut out for itself when the Comets arrive at Mollenkopf Stadium Friday night.

A standout at Miami University (Ohio) and former NHL forward Justin Mercier has agreed to terms with the Toledo Walleye for the 2014-15 season.

Mercier split last season between Idaho in the ECHL and Iowa and Bridgeport of the AHL. As captain of the Steelheads, Mercier posted a career best 30 points (18G, 12A) in 43 contests. The veteran forward has skated in 239 games at the AHL level (41G, 40A, 213 penalty minutes) with stops in Lake Erie, Iowa and Bridgeport. The sixth round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft appeared in nine games with Colorado during the 2009-10 season and scored his first NHL goal on February 4, 2010 in a 5-3 loss to Nashville. He also had one assist with the Avalanche.

"Justin brings great leadership and experience to us in Toledo," said Coach Derek Lalonde. "This is a tremendous signing for us going into the season. It is exciting for us to add a player of his caliber on and off the ice to this team."

There wasn’t any big secret how Lake’s boys golf team won the Northern Buckeye Conference championship last fall.

Coach Dorian Boggs’ team won the overall title without winning a single conference “shootout” or even the end-of-the-season NBC tournament. The Flyers took second at the tournament, took second in three shootouts and finished third in the other shootout.

“We were rewarded for our consistency,” Boggs said.

Lake returns three lettermen this year but must replace first-team All-NBC performer Michael Kranz along with starters Jeff Wilson and Lucas Zeh. The returning lettermen are seniors Ian Johnson and Dylan Mauder and sophomore Owen Johnson.
