If you pay attention to high school sports, you've probably heard the statistic that private schools, despite making up just 17 percent of the membership of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, have won 40 percent of the state titles since 1999.

This has created an uproar from some public schools in the Buckeye State who claim that private schools have unfair advantages, and as a result, has prompted four consecutive years of votes on what is known as a competitive balance proposal.

Votes are currently being taken until Wednesday on a contentious issue that has been the subject of discussion in the circles of high school sports during the past few years.

Keeping up on current high school conference baseball standings isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, given rainouts and makeup games in this part of the country.

First-year Northwood coach John Segura knows his team’s record and he knows the Rangers are tied for first place in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. He just doesn’t know who the Rangers are tied with.

“The first-place TAAC team has two losses,” Segura said, “and I know we’re one of them.”

University of Findlay junior Justin Welch (Eastwood) not only won an NCAA Division II national indoor title, he now owns national all-time records and qualified for the upcoming NCAA national outdoor championship meet in several throwing events.

UF Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Dave Buck emailed The Press, saying Welch is the runaway favorite to win the outdoor national title in the hammer throw.

"Justin is a tremendous person and an outstanding athlete," said UF coach Marc Arce. "We have had a number of great throwers over the years and Justin may very well be the best of the bunch."
