Stu Brubaker had a good season on the race track.

The Gibsonburg High School graduate won 305 sprint car championships this season at both Fremont and Attica racetracks. They are the first two points championships Brubaker has won in four years or racing.

"Last year I ended up fourth," said Brubaker, 24. "We had better equipment this year and we added our crew chief. Last year I was doing it by myself and this year I had one of my best friends, Joe Laugherty, come on board. He helped me from time to time the year before when we finished fourth."

Coach: Mike May, first year, 0-0.
Last Year: 8-3 (6-1 Sandusky Bay Conference).

Forecast: May has the task of keeping the Rockets rolling after coach Gary Quisno, who is now at Sandusky Perkins, led the program to a 224-83 record in 29 years. Oak Harbor, which lost in the first round of the playoffs to Marion Pleasant last fall, made eight playoff appearances under Quisno.

"There's an old saying in football that you never want to follow a legend, but I saw it as an advantage," May said. "He left the program in such great shape. Everything was intact coming in. He and his staff did such a great job over the years. The kids already knew how to work hard and they are used to discipline and have been fundamentally sound over the years. There are a lot of advantages to following coach Quisno."

Northwood joined the Toledo Area Athletic Conference in 2000 and has beaten Ottawa Hills in six out of seven meetings on the football field.

Rangers coach Ken James, who took over the Northwood program in 1986, has a 16-5 all-time record against the Green Bears.

The veteran coach, however, isn’t counting on his team’s past history against Ottawa Hills to have any bearing on its Oct. 10 meeting on the Bears’ turf.

Last season, Northwood struggled en route to a 28-21 win over Ottawa Hills. It was the Rangers’ closest conference game of the year on their way to the TAAC title.
