Forgive the Clay girls soccer team if you heard it chanting "de-fense, de-fense" on the field this season.

Coach Scott Wamer's squad, led by keeper Hallie Thompson, finished 2008 with a school-record 11 shutouts and allowed just 13 goals in 19 matches.

"Defense was a huge key to the success we had this season," Wamer said.

The Genoa Comets and Eastwood Eagles were in good position to be playoff-bound heading into last Friday night’s games, but it didn’t look good for Northwood.

“Given the great difference in the fourth and fifth place, it seems as though — win or lose, we will be hosting a home play-off game,” Genoa athletic director Rick Briggle e-mailed The Press heading into Genoa’s Friday night contest hosting Otsego.

The 2008 season didn't end like Coach Tracy Donnelly and the Cardinal Strich volleyball team hoped.

Their season came to a heartbreaking end Tuesday night at Perrysburg with a 22-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17, 16-14 loss to Otsego in the Division III district semifinals.

That loss, however, didn't take away from what the Cardinals accomplished this season in winning their second straight Toledo Area Athletic Conference championship as well as a sectional title.
