Maybe it's a good thing that not many people expect Gibsonburg's boys’ basketball team to do much this season.

With just two returning lettermen - 6-5 senior post Tony Egbert and 5-9 senior point guard T.J. Bowen - returning from last year's 13-9 squad, Coach Brent Liskai's Golden Bears were picked to finish fourth in the Suburban Lakes League.

The Bears, who had to replace eight seniors including SLL Player of the Year Matt Kreglow, have already shown that they're not about to listen to what other people think.

Veteran Waite wrestling coach Carmen Amenta is either playing mind games with his troops, or he knows deep down his young Indians will have an uphill climb en route to winning their first City League title since 2005.

"Clay is loaded and will be battling it out with Central, and everybody else will be trying for third," said Amenta, in his 19th season. "We have a lot of youngsters in the lineup and Clay has 11 seniors who are very good, and Central has six or seven seniors who are very good.

"We're going to be battling for third or fourth place. We're going to wait until those other guys graduate and we'll be up there challenging again. We're looking forward to the season to get rolling. Hopefully, we stay healthy and get several kids down to the state tournament this year."

Oak Harbor wrestlers had three teams competing the first weekend of the season, including two high school teams and one junior high team.

At the high school level, the Rockets traveled to the Walsh Jesuit Iron Man Tournament and came away with one place-winner. Sophomore Konner Witt worked out a fifth place finish in the 145 pound weight class with a 6-2 record. Sophomore Ian Miller, sophomore Jake Cramer, and junior Zach Bergman each grabbed a victory to help the team score as well.

Top wrestlers returning for Oak Harbor that competed at the Iron Man include junior Mike Mallernee (171, 39-10 last season), freshman Alex Bergman, Cramer (119, 37-19), Miller (135, 33-5), Witt (145, 33-12), and Zach Bergman (130, 18-22).
