Last season, when two Toledo City League boys’ teams reached the state final four, it showed how good the league was.

When Whitmer lost to eventual state champion Newark, 63-44, in the Division I state semifinal at Value City Arena, it only added to the City League’s mystique. To many observers, the Panthers gave Newark a better game than top-ranked Lakewood St. Edward did in the final.

But it also demonstrated how far the City League’s East Side school, Toledo Waite, had come in varsity boys’ basketball under coach and Waite alumnus Dave Pitsenbarger. Waite was already there in girls’ basketball.

GENOA, Oh. - And behold, on the eighth day, God formed a weird, but wonderful, oblong object better known as a pigskin out of His own two strong hands, and He forged out of the very earth’s mud, and grass, and freezing rain, and biting snow, and lifeblood, 56 tough, young men to roll around in the cold muck with that ball, and then He molded shiny, maroon and gray helmets, with sacred “Gs” scratched into the sides, and then lastly He assembled together a great pile of cumbersome rocks, that would eventually go on to become great, old Bergman Field, and He named this whole beautiful creation Genoa Comets’ football, and alas, it was all so good.

In the SLL, the Woodmore and Genoa boys basketball teams would like to have something to say about it, but league favorite Eastwood’s front line is loaded with five players who stand over 6-foot-4, even though all may not be starters.

That doesn’t include some quality backcourt talent coming up from younger levels, if Coach Todd Henline can get his players to perform at their best levels.

“The jayvees were 14-6 last year and I think we’re going to have some kids who are going to be able to step in and fill that scoring and rebounding void that we lost in Chad Fairbanks (14 ppg., 7 rpg.),” Henline said.
