The Cardinal Stritch girls’ basketball team took second place in the Toledo Area

Athletic Conference last year behind Ottawa Hills, but the Cardinals aren't waiting until official practice starts on Oct. 30 to try to reclaim the conference crown.

The Cardinals, who have won three TAAC titles in Coach Gary Lemle's six years as coach, have had a busy summer in an effort to build a new squad and jell as a team.

"We just wrapped up a busy June, when we did the Summer Slam out at the University of Toledo and at the UT women's team Shootout," Lemle said. "We do the UT Shootout every year, but the Summer Slam was new for us. We wanted to try that out because we didn't participate in Steve Mix (at UT). This year we're going to be pretty young, so we try to develop some of the younger players to gauge their ability."

The Ohio Monarchs Gold summer college baseball team will get to defend their championship at next month's LineDrive Sportz NABF College World Series presented by BCSN in Toledo.

"We're always talking about going back and winning it again," said Cory Hornyak, a 2006 Genoa graduate who pitches and plays outfield for the Monarchs. "That would be a big thing for us to do. No one's ever done it, so we're hoping to be the first."

This year's NABF World Series will be held Aug. 6-9 at Ned Skeldon Stadium, Owens Community College, Bowman Park and the University of Toledo's Scott Park.

Scott Bergman named league’s Athlete of the Decade
The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference recognized 18 athletes at its “Athletes of the Decade” event in Indianapolis, and one of them is former Woodmore basketball player Scott Bergman. Bergman went on to star at Bluffton University in the HCAC.

As a first team all-conference selection in 2005-06, Bergman led the HCAC with 607 points, including 335 in conference play which gave him two of the top three scoring seasons in HCAC history.
