Fremont Speedway handed out awards and prize money to the drivers who finished in the top 10 in points in the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks at a packed banquet on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Crowned champion in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 sprints is Liepsic, Ohio's Todd Heuerman.

2. Paul Weaver from Fremont, Ohio. The two-time Fremont 305 sprint champion competed in all 17 A-mains recording an astounding 15 top 10 finishes. He scored 6 top 5 runs, including three wins - on July 4, July 18 and the NRA 305 challenge on Aug. 15. Finishing just one point behind champion Todd Heuerman, Weaver also scored a runner-up finish.

His average A-main finishing position was 7th.

If you see Nick Grodi behind the wheel of a NASCAR automobile some day, don't

be surprised.

Racing is in the Oak Harbor High School junior's blood.

Grodi's father, Mark, and his great-grandfather both raced Enduro cars, and his grandfather raced mini-stocks.

"I took the No. 40 from my grandpa and great-grandpa," Grodi said, "so I'm a third-generation driver. I love the adrenaline rush (racing) gives you and the thrill. It's cool.

"When I was about 4 or 5, we went to the Toledo Recreation Center for a home and garden show and me and my dad heard some noises at the track there, where they had the quarter midgets. We went over and checked that out and I liked them. I guess I told my dad, 'That one's mine!' and 'That one's mine!' A couple years later we got a race car and I really got into it."

The University of Connecticut came calling. So did South Carolina, Oklahoma,

Auburn, Xavier, and Maryland, among others.

Those schools all wanted the services of Waite senior Natasha Howard. In the end, Howard, a 6-3 guard-forward, chose Florida State University, in Tallahassee, Fla.

"Their players have good chemistry with the coaches," Howard said. "The distance doesn't bother me. It doesn't matter. The campus is real nice. I can see myself down there right now."

Howard signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Seminoles during a press conference at Waite on Nov. 13.  She was surrounded by her mother, Latasha, along with aunts, uncles, cousins, her godmother and teammates.

"It was great when I (signed)," Howard said. "Everybody was there supporting me and I was pretty happy about that."
