Bruno Marotta still has "quite a bit" of learning to do when it comes to how the

Bruno Marotta

game of basketball is played in the United States, according to first-year Clay boys coach Rob Belegrin.

Where Marotta comes from, the courts are the same size and the rim still measures 10 feet high, but there are subtle nuances the Brazilian exchange student still finds himself brushing up on in the U.S.

"Little things like hand checking and foul shooting violations, his release on the foul shot," Belegrin said. "He did that last Friday night. He entered the lane on the release instead of waiting for the ball to hit the rim. They play a more physical game (in Brazil), and they call that stuff here.

"Also, he's carrying the ball a little bit on his dribble. He gets his hand under the ball on his hesitation moves. He's looked better in practice dribbling the ball, as far as (not) palming it."

The Genoa Community Christian Academy boys’ basketball team is playing its first season in a new league this year.

The Crusaders are competing in the Independent Christian Schools of Ohio/Michigan (ICSOM) league with Monclova Christian Academy, Grand Lake Christian (St. Mary’s), Lima Bible Believers Christian, Fountain City Christian (Bryan), and Bowling Green Christian.

BG Christian recently expanded from a K-8 school to K-12 and is building a new complex, and officials there say they would even like to have football someday.

Monclova Christian Academy plays many Toledo Area Athletic Conference schools, including Northwood, will be a probationary member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association next year, and currently is much larger than the other ICSOM schools (25 boys, grades 9-12).

Last season, Waite boys’ basketball won the City League regular season title (10-

1) and finished the season 14-6, losing to Scott in the Division I sectional final at Central Catholic’s Sullivan Center.
Of course, every season there is plenty of competition in the CL with perennial powers St. John’s Jesuit, Scott, Libbey, Central Catholic, and St. Francis DeSales. Don’t forget that every single school in the CL always brings something to the table, whether it’s Start, Rogers, Whitmer, or whoever.
The table is not bare for Coach Dave Pitsenbarger, a 1983 Waite graduate who has done his job making his alma mater a contender.
“We have three players returning (Antonio Allen, Dishon Harris, Ke-sean Harris) who have been a part of our success the past two years. They know what it takes and how it feels to win,” Pitsenbarger said. “We have the flexibility to go with several lineups—big, small, small and quick, big and quick, and a mix.
