In a strange sort of way, a loss for a team with high expectations can be a good thing.

At the same time, a narrow victory can give a team confirmation that it will be able to adapt and overcome when the going gets tough.

Take the case of the Genoa and Lake girls basketball teams, who meet in the Press Game of the Week on Jan. 15 in Millbury.

On Dec. 28, a 7-0 Genoa team suffered its first loss of the season, a 53-39 setback at home against a 5-2 Toledo Christian squad.

"It was a poor shooting night," Comets coach Tom Kontak said. "Toledo Christian is a solid team. They did some things defensively that we were not ready for offensively. The good news is, it was a learning experience and we've adapted a few things from that loss.

"In a strange sort of way, that loss turned into a positive. We're still learning who we are. That was one of those games we learned from."

If you have not yet seen a quality City League girls’ basketball game, do it.

It can be impressive just watching the state-ranked Start Spartans or their City League foe, the Waite Indians, play basketball.

“We like to keep it competitive and exciting,” Waite coach Manny May said. “That’s our job as coaches, is to get it to the next level. I’m happy the fans are enjoying it.”

The much-anticipated matchup does not happen until Feb. 19 at Waite’s Grant Murray Field House.

“That’s at the end of the season in February when we play Start, but that’s something we’re not even looking forward to that point. I mean, that’s down the road. We’ve got plenty of games before that time before we can assess that game itself,” May said.

Waite remains undefeated in seven games, and this Wednesday the 2-4 Clay Eagles will have the dubious pleasure of hosting their east side rivals.

To most of us, it’s “Eastwood,” but around the state it’s “Pemberville

Eastwood.” “Pemberville Eastwood” got mentioned quite a bit in state-wide media during 2009.

It’s not Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller, Canton McKInley, or Lakewood St. Edward, but it’s getting there.
