The Owens Community College women's basketball team has moved up to No. 4

   Brittany Darling

in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II poll after the release of this week's poll.

The team has made the steady climb from No. 11 in the preseason poll. They moved to ninth in the first regular season poll on Nov. 18. They moved to eighth on Nov. 25, #7 on Dec. 9, and fifth on Jan. 20.

The No. 4 ranking is the highest regular season ranking the team has achieved in school history.

The team is currently 20-2 (6-0) on the year. Their only two losses have been to the No. 1 NJCAA Div. II ranked team, Schoolcraft, by one point and to Hillsborough, an NJCAA Div. I team, by three points.

Owens defeated No. 28 Lakeland CC last week 65-52. Lakeland is now 15-5 (4-2).

Leaders for the Owens women were Brittany Darling (Genoa) - 13 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks; Demi Moschetti (Perrysburg) - 10 points, eight rebounds; Jasmine Blanton (Notre Dame) - nine points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals; and Sarah Clark (Delphos St. John's) - five points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.

The Lakeland CC men defeated Owens 95-64 in Kirtland, Ohio. Owens drops to 9-13 (2-4). Lakeland moves to 15-6 (5-1) and is in first place in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Leaders for the Owens men were DaLante Heard (Rogers) - 12 points, 14 rebounds, one block, one steal; 1 assist Earl Hardison - 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals; and Josh Robinson (Elkhart Central) - eight points, six rebounds, three steals, two assists.

Hosting the SBC duals is always exciting for the host team, especially when that

team dominates the field and goes undefeated.

Oak Harbor did just that this past weekend as eight teams walked into the gym and only one came out with a perfect 7-0 record.

Oak Harbor rolled through the competition. The Rocket wrestlers left no doubt that they are the superior team in the SBC. Things started off on a high note with a 61-0 victory over Margaretta and were left at pretty much that, averaging 61 points per match while giving up no more than 16 points in any dual and losing no more than three matches in any dual.

Oak Harbor defeated Perkins 62-6, Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic 60-16, Huron 71-3, Clyde 59-15, Port Clinton 60-14, and Edison 55-15.

Six of the wrestlers finished things off with perfect 7-0 records, which should earn them top seeds when the tournament comes up.

Denny Meyer doesn't have a lot to complain about these days.

    Kaysie Brittenham

The second-year Lake girls’ basketball coach, whose team is ranked eighth in this week's Division III state poll, has the Flyers off to a 13-0 start.

Meyer is also a proud papa. His daughter Kimberly is a starting senior guard and leads Lake in assists with 3.3 per game. Meyer's daughter Michelle coaches the Flyers' 13-0 junior varsity team, and his daughter Stephanie has coached the seventh grade team to a 12-0 mark.

Denny Meyer is proud for another reason: his team's unselfish play.

"I like their work ethic and how unselfish they are," he said. "We have a lot of older people from our community come to our games and they'll come up and tell me that's what they like about our team. They say that's how it was when they were growing up, that teams were so unselfish. That shows in our scoring, how we can have a different leading scorer every night."

The Flyers are averaging 54 points a game, but that number is somewhat skewed because they usually have such a big lead in the fourth quarter that Lake's reserves get lots of playing time.

The Flyers gave up 23 points against Swanton on Tuesday and allowed 24 against Elmwood on Jan. 21. Gibsonburg managed 30 points against Lake on Jan. 18, and in the biggest game of the Suburban Lakes League season to date, Genoa committed 27 turnovers in a 51-40 loss at Lake on Jan. 15.
