The Waite girls’ basketball team has been looking forward to the Division I girls’ basketball tournament all season. The time is here.

After losing three times to Start last year, the Indians defeated the Division I state runner-up Spartans twice this year to claim a City League championship. No. 6 ranked Waite (18-2) may have to face No. 7 Start (16-4) a third time this season in the District final on March 6 at Perrysburg High School (7 p.m.).

Waite first had to get past east side rival Clay (10-9) on Feb. 27, and if successful is to face the Northview (18-2)-Bowsher (12-7) winner on Mar. 4 at Central Catholic, game time 7 p.m., for the right to play in the District final.

Welcome to the Toledo City League, Pemberville Eastwood.

The City League has not really invited Eastwood, yet, but the Eastwood boys (13-5) are getting a good dose of City basketball this year — having lost to CL final four qualifier Central Catholic (15-2), 56-49, on Dec. 22.

Next, the Eagles open the Division II sectional tournament on Mar. 2 at 6:15 p.m. against Woodward (2-15), and the winner faces Libbey (10-6) in the sectional final, Mar. 5 at 6:15 p.m.

Where are both games at? Clay’s Harold Potter Field House, also a City League facility. If Eastwood can defeat Libbey, the Eagles could face Scott (3-15) two games later in a district final (Mar. 13, 2 p.m.) at Bowling Green State University’s Anderson Arena — named for Harold Anderson, a former basketball coach at Waite.
