Three former Genoa Comets — infielder Jolynn Brossia, pitcher Aerica Susor, and infielder Lydia Eckel are all returning sophomores for the Owens Community College softball team.

Susor compiled a 6-3 record and a 2.57 earned run average last year. Eckel, a sophomore infielder, collected 25 hits, 10 doubles and 27 RBIs for the Express last year.

Joining them is first-year infielder Matea Rice (Clay), pitcher Elizabeth Weber (Oak Harbor); infielder Annie DeTray (Oak Harbor); and outfielder Courtney Mowery (Genoa).

Owens opened its home season against Muskegon Community College on March 19.

The Owens program is guided by seventh-year coach Duane Lanham. His assistants are Michael Murphy and Kevin Snyder.

The Express completed the 2009 season with a 34-10 overall record and captured its seventh Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (11-4 record) title in the program’s history. Owens has won four out of the last five OCCAC regular season championships (2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009). The Express lost to Lansing Community College in the NJCAA Region XII Championships.

homemade, hand-painted t-shirt that proclaimed “My Big Sister is The Simone Eli” during Genoa’s fourth-straight appearance in the sectional basketball final.

At Genoa, 5-foot-8, 118 pound Simone amassed 1,350 career points, two Suburban Lakes League titles, one District 7 Player-of-the-Year award in four years.

Simone has scored a total of six points during her freshman season as a Bowling Green Falcon, but she has seen playing time — playing in 13 games

But she did get to wear the much-sweeter t-shirt trimmed in BG orange that read “2009-2010 MAC Champs” as an up-and-coming point guard for coach Curt Miller’s six-time Mid-American Conference-champion, NCAA postseason tournament-bound Falcons

“Really, ever since I was old enough to understand the importance of the NCAA tourney around the age of 6, I have watched every year the selections of the teams that have earned their positions to play, as one of the top 64 teams in the whole country,” enthuses the 18-year-old Eli.

If you are attending high school tournament games, and you spot a man, about 5-foot-6, wearing a baker boy cap and walking with a cane, chances are it is Dave Spengler.

Spengler, a 1971 Elmwood graduate, and Sylvania resident Dave Sigler, are the publishers of Davey1.com — a high school boys basketball website that publishes two editions of “The Trial Trash” each season.

Unfortunately, in the eastern Maumee Bay region most of the boys’ teams were done by the time sectionals ended. However, “The Swami” at Davey1.com in Year 17, Issue 1, predicted Genoa would win a Division III sectional title.

“Genoa is the mystery team at Whitmer. The Comets have some size and good athletes although the whole isn’t always greater than the sum of the parts. Evergreen cannot be excited having Genoa on their side of the bracket. Both Swanton and Lake could pull the upset with Swanton having the better chance,” The Swami wrote.

The Swami’s predictions did not come true. Spengler emphasizes that The Swami is Sigler, but it is Spengler who began the website. Spengler, who for the past decade has been an accounting and computer maintenance specialist at NAT Transportation about seven miles south of Pemberville, met Sigler when both lived in Bowling Green.
