A long season of building, learning and public anticipation appears to be on the

brink of reaping unprecedented success for coach Manny May’s sixth-ranked Waite Lady Indians basketball team.

The 22-2 Indians were to meet a Cinderella Perrysburg squad in a Division I regional final at Norwalk High School Saturday afternoon with a berth in the D-I state semifinals on the line.

Riding a six-game win streak that has includes City League and district titles acquired by beating fellow state-ranked foe Start in both cases, Waite went into the regional final as a heavy favorite to advance on to the final four on March 20 at 6:15 p.m. at Ohio State’s Value City Arena.

The Indians have won 13 straight against Ohio teams, but Waite’s winding road to this point has also experienced two potholes — both against defending state champions.

The sixth-ranked Waite Indians were one point ahead of Sylvania Northview entering the fourth quarter of a district final tournament game.
The Waite-Northview match-up pitted the City League champion against the Northern Lakes League champion, which are coached by Eastwood graduate Jerry Sigler. It pitted Waite’s Florida State-bound 6-foot-3 center Natasha Howard against 6-1 Eastern Michigan-bound Olivia Fouty.
The first three quarters, Northview was keeping up with Waite’s fast and furious pace, and was scoring just as quickly as the Indians. Entering the final stanza, each team had already committed 16 turnovers.
“I think the key point with us running up and down the floor we like that, we had 20 turnovers,” Waite coach Manny May said. “We cannot have turnovers like that, or we are going to have to go back to school.”
Yet, May seemed to remain calm along the sidelines through the first 24 minutes of a fast paced and ruggedly contested game at Central Catholic’s Sullivan Center.
