Grigson's grandfather in Northwood, is an RN and has been a nursing supervisor at the University of Toledo Medical Center (formerly MCO) for the past two and a half years.

The 5-10 Oregon native, now 37 years old, was a mechanic before he decided to go into nursing.

“It kind of got to where I realized getting a degree, some good insurance and being able to take a vacation was important,” Drake said of switching careers. “I became a nurse at 26. I felt I had to find a degree and I chose nursing. I'm a people person and I always enjoyed the sciences.

“I worked full-time as a mechanic and went to school full-time, and I would have to scrub my nails real good before I went to clinicals. I cut trees on the side now ... I'm all over the place.”

If you Googled the University of Michigan women's track and field website recently, it shouldn't have been any surprise that Woodmore graduate Emily Pendleton's picture was the site's featured artwork.

She's earned it.

Pendleton, a junior thrower for the Wolverines, has won all three discus events she has participated in during the spring outdoor season. The two-time defending Big Ten discus champion's season-best throw came in the opening meet when she threw 53.98 meters (177.1 feet) at the Bulls Invitational.

She is the only Wolverine to have the top mark or time in more than one event (discus and hammer throw) this season.

Last year Pendleton helped UM take second at the Big Ten Championships and seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

This year’s Muddies should have plenty of offense to go with the weekend post game fireworks. This prospect-filled squad will feature four of the Tigers’ top 10 future stars. Daniel Schlereth (Acquired from Arizona in the Edwin Jackson trade), Casper Wells, Robbie Weinhardt, and Ryan Strieby should bring the Hens success and excitement.

Starting Rotation: As long as they don’t get thinned out by Tiger call ups, the starting rotation is greatly improved over last year. Ruddy Lugo was Toledo’s most reliable starter last year going 13-9 with a 4.07 ERA. Phil Dumatrait is coming off an injury plagued 2009. He was a former first round pick of the Red Sox and spent the last two seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen. Armando Galarraga has become the forgotten man in Detroit. In 2008 he was the surprise of baseball winning 13 games, posting a 3.73 ERA and finishing 4th in the rookie of the year voting. But, last year was a struggle, going 6-10 with a 5.64 ERA. Expect him to rebound at Triple A.  Enrique Gonzalez, a Triple A veteran, has been waived and released by several teams, most recently Boston. He spent most of last season at Pawtucket and pitched well for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. Alfredo Figaro pitched at Double A Erie and was twice named Player of the Week before getting called up to the Tigers and going 2-2 with a  6.35 ERA. Grade B
