At 23 years old and in his fifth season with the Bowling Green State University baseball team, Kevin Leady is soaking it all in.

He appreciates every opportunity he gets to take the mound for the Falcons, and even those three-hour bus rides don't seem so bad anymore.

Leady, a former three-sport star at Eastwood, has been through more adversity than most college athletes after recovering from two major injuries. If Leady chooses, he can play baseball again next season for the two-time defending Mid-American Conference regular-season champions after being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

The 6-3, 195-pound right-hander has earned his teaching degree and will graduate on May 8.

“I've been looking forward to that,” Leady said. “I've gone to school for a reason, to get my degree, and it feels great.”

Leady secured a student teaching position this year and teaches math and science to fourth-graders at Haskins Elementary in the Otsego school disrict.

“I love it,” Leady said. “It's awesome. It's what I love to do.”

Rob Schimmoeller has been in a pretty good mood lately, and for good reason.

For starters, as of Tuesday his Oak Harbor baseball team was tied for first place in the Sandusky Bay Conference with perennial SBC power Perkins. Secondly, on April 12 the sixth-year coach got his first win over the Ray Neal-coached Pirates when the Rockets handed the visitors a 4-3 loss.

“That gave us a lot of confidence, to beat the defending league champions,” said Schimmoeller, whose team traveled to Perkins on Wednesday. “They've won our league at least eight or nine of the last 10 years. Beating them gave the kids a ton of confidence going into the league schedule.”

Senior pitcher Damion McAtee scattered nine hits over five innings to earn the win over Perkins, using his fastball, slider, curve, and knuckleball to “keep Perkins' hitters off-balance,” according to Schimmoeller.

Through 15 games, Oak Harbor had a 12-3 overall record including 5-1 in the SBC. Its only conference loss (4-0) was to an Edison team that returned most of a squad that reached the regional tournament in 2009.

Woodmore eighth grader competes against the world
Woodmore eighth grader Kathy Reynolds, a member of the USA Junior National Karate Team, won the Silver Medal at the USA Team Trials in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida last July.

Reynolds went on to represent the USA at the Junior Pan American Games in El Salvador, where she won the Gold Medal. In 2010, Reynolds is building on her success by recently winning the bronze medal at the International Junior Olympics at Caesar's Palace Las Vegas, Nevada.

Reynolds was also part of a three-person Kumite (Sparring) team which won a Silver Medal in The USA Open, also in Las Vegas. Reynolds paired up with teammates from Lima, Peru and Frisco, Texas.  After a sound defeat of the Italian Team, the team lost the Gold Medal Match to Canada by one point.
