University of Michigan junior Emily Pendleton (Woodmore) took third in the discus, while freshman Erin Pendleton (Woodmore) finished eighth to qualify for the NCAA Championships as the University of Michigan women's track and field team completed competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 29 at Irwin Bell Track.

Emily Pendleton earned her third consecutive NCAA Championships berth, finishing third in the discus with a mark of 54.48 meters (178-9) on her third throw. Big Ten Outdoor Freshman of the Year Erin Pendleton also moved on to the NCAA Championships with an eighth-place throw of 51.82 meters (170-0). She fouled on three of her first four attempts before hitting her mark on the fifth attempt to advance.

The Pendleton sisters will be Michigan's lone representatives at the NCAA Championships (June 9-12), both competing in the discus. Emily will look to improve upon her 2009 ninth-place showing, while Erin is making her NCAA Championships debut.

Erin, who earlier this season rewrote the school’s discus-throw record, won the event with a Big Ten Championships record throw of 56.31 meters (184-9). Emily took runner-up, throwing 54.57 meters (179 feet) as the duo combined for 18 team points.

Major League Baseball umpire and Toledo native Jim Joyce may lose sleep over his blown call Wednesday night that robbed Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game.

Joyce was seen sobbing in post-game interviews. Galarraga lost what a Genoa family still celebrates today.

The attention around Galarraga’s one-hitter provides Genoa resident Michael Mann another reason to reminisce about his great grandfather, John Lee Richmond of the Worcester Ruby Legs, who pitched the first perfect game in major league history.

“When I was growing up it was dinner table discussion,” Mann said. “He was like the celebrity of the family.”

The Worcester Evening Gazette called the 27 up-27 down moment on June 12, 1880 “the best game on record” and Baseball Almanac presents a comprehensive box score on the publications’ website. June 12, 2010 will mark the 130th anniversary of Richmond’s perfection.

Just as in Detroit’s 3-0 victory Wednesday, Worcester’s opponent was Cleveland. For the Tigers Wednesday, it was the Indians, and for the Ruby Sox in the late 19th Century, it was the Cleveland Blues of the National League.

Three students from Kim's Taekwondo Academy, located in West Toledo, have qualified for the AAU National Taekwondo Championships June 28 through July 3 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Angel Whiteman of Genoa, Tre Mettie of Graytown and Lilly Harris of Toledo qualified for Nationals by winning age-group gold, silver or bronze medals on May 1 at the AAU Ohio State Championships in Columbus.

All three local competitors are trained by Kim's Academy owner/instructor Master Saemter Kim.

Whiteman, 18, who took silver in patterns at the Ohio State Championships, is a second-degree black belt in taekwondo. She has been training for nearly 13 years.
