Clay senior pole vaulter Meghan Scharer nearly won a Division I district pole vault preliminaries at St. Francis DeSales High School by leaping 9-feet-4 in the finals. She lost to Whitmer senior Christina Schultz in a tie-breaker. Even though Baums Page ( listed Scharer first, she was not the district champion,

Schlultz won the event on jumps. They both cleared the same height but Meghan had an earlier miss which gave Schultz the title. Scharer did win the City League championship this year with a jump of 9-6 and was the district champion last year.

Scharer, who has committed to the University of Dayton for soccer, also qualified for the D-I regional at Amherst Steele.

But it was the Clay boys track team that did the most scoring damage at the district meet, finishing fifth with 65½ points while the girls team finished 11th with 18 points.

Qualifying for the regional meet at Amherst Steele is the 4x800 relay team of junior Robert Hoffman, senior Patrick Roman, junior Adam Bess, and senior Taylor Durczynski after finishing third at the district meet in 8:08.79, exactly three seconds behind the champions from St. John’s Jesuit.

Hoffman, junior Eric Wood, and sophomores Jason Bucha and Ryan Laberdee qualified in the 4x400, finishing fourth at districts (3:25.64), just over four seconds behind the championship team from Bowsher.

Woodmore's boys’ and girls’ track and field athletes have their eyes on the prize.

The prize is competing at next Friday and Saturday's Division III state meet in Columbus. The big challenge, however, is getting there.

Last week's district meet at Eastwood was step one. Step two was Wednesday and Friday at the regional meet in Tiffin. The top four regional placers in each event will advance to Columbus.

Woodmore girls coach Mike Pendleton said the Wildcats are willing to do whatever it takes to get to the state meet.

“We got a lot of kids out at districts, but this week the hole gets a lot smaller,” he said. “It's a real different deal. A lot of really good kids are coming in, so everybody's got to knock their times down.”

Woodmore claimed both the boys and girls titles at the district meet. Both teams are well-represented at the regional.

There is nothing like having your cake and eating it, too.

That’s exactly what the Clay softball team did Tuesday — one day after winning the City League championship with a 4-0 victory over St. Ursula Academy at the University of Toledo.

The team gathered in the Clay school library for cake to celebrate the championship and the signing of two athletes who are headed to Owens Community College to play softball next year.

Owens seven-year coach Duane Lanham said he wanted to wait until the Eagles ended their season to celebrate his team’s signing of Clay seniors Hallie Thompson and Kasey Graham. Clay finished with a 24-5 record.

In the CL final, Clay scored two runs in the first inning and one each in the third and fourth to defeat the Arrows for the second time in a week. Senior pitcher Kelsey Graham allowed three hits and struck out 11 to preserve the shutout. Kim Crawford went 3-for-3 with a double and scored two runs.

“It was nice to end on a positive note. We could focus our energies and go out with a win, and not a lot of seniors get to do that,” tenth-year Clay coach Brenda Radabaugh said.
