Genoa heads into final year on gridiron with 11 titles
According to research on the Suburban Lakes League over its 48-year history since 1972-73, Eastwood has done the best overall in football and volleyball, Genoa tops in boys soccer, Lake the best in girls soccer, Woodmore in girls cross country, and Lakota is No. 1 in boys cross country.

The research, done by Eastwood 1968 graduate and long-time golf coach Mike Gardner, began during his college days at Bowling Green State University.

The SLL is heading into its final school year of competition. In 2011-12, the Northern Buckeye Conference will begin with Fostoria, Rossford, and former SLL members Eastwood, Lake, Elmwood, Woodmore, Otsego, and Genoa. SLL charter member Gibsonburg will begin its first year of competition in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, Lakota left last year for the Midland Athletic League.

So far, Genoa leads with 11 football championships. The Comets are followed by Eastwood (10), Gibsonburg and Otsego (7 each), Elmwood has (6), Woodmore (5), Oak Harbor (4), and Lake, Northwood, and Lakota each have one.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors today voted to award both Stark County and Columbus the opportunity to host the state football finals for two years each beginning with the 2012 season. The vote took place during a special Board conference call meeting and was in response to a recommendation from an 11-person state football finals subcommittee.

Stark County, which has hosted all or portions of the finals for the past 20 years and has two years remaining on the current contract to host the finals, has been awarded the 2012 and 2013 championships, while Columbus will host the finals in 2014 and 2015. As part of the motion to approve the recommendation, the Board also gave itself the opportunity to discuss option years for hosting the finals in the future. Stark County will continue to utilize Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium as the site for the six championship games in a two-day format rotating between the two facilities and Columbus will host all six finals at Ohio Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University also in a two-day format.

Justin Thomas was used to pitching in Northwest Ohio, but not on a stage quite this big.

Thomas, a 2002 Clay High School graduate, threw two scoreless innings in relief and struck out four Mud Hens in the Indianapolis Indians' 7-3 loss on May 15 at Fifth Third Field.

“A lot of my family was there,” Thomas said. “My dad (Steve) and my two uncles, my wife (Theresa) and some of her family, and my mom (Jackie) and the majority of her family that lives in town were there. A lot of my high school buddies were there, too. It was pretty cool.”

The Indians will be back in Toledo on Aug. 18-20, but frankly, Thomas would rather be somewhere else.

The 6-3, 215-pound left-hander has already pitched at the major-league level this season, and he hopes to be back there as soon as possible.

Thomas, 26, spent the last two seasons with Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League. Tacoma is the Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, who decided to take Thomas off their 40-man roster last November.
