Owens Community College men’s soccer will look to contend for its first-ever conference title by opening

The Express took on Delta College on Saturday and Ancilla College on Sunday.

The Express will open its home season against Lorain County Community College on Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. 

Returning to the team this year is Cody Katschke (Genoa). Last year, Katschke, a sophomore defender, recorded two goals and four points. Kastchke will be joined by first-year forward Sean Kaighin (Clay).

The Owens men’s soccer program is led by Coach Art Johnson. Johnson’s assistants are Jeremiah McNutt and Keith Closson. The Express completed its twelfth season as an Owens athletic program in 2009. Owens finished with a 12-7-1 overall record and in second place in the final OCCAC (3-3 record) standings.

“We have an extremely talented team that is committed to working hard and getting better each and every day on the soccer field,” stated Johnson. “I am really counting on our veterans to provide strong leadership for the first-year players, which will be critical to our success. Several of the first-year players will also be expected to step in and play at a very high level. Our team certainly has the potential of competing for the program’s first conference title.”


The Owens Community College women’s volleyball program opened its 2010 season with a tournament Aug. 27-28 at Grand Rapids Community College, Mich.

Owens Express returnees include Lauren Lind (Lake) and Alyssa LaVoy (Eastwood). Lind is a sophomore outside hitter and recorded 135 kills, 44 digs and 16 blocks in 66 games last season for Owens. LaVoy, a sophomore defensive specialist, played in 21 games and recorded 19 digs. Additionally, she was an OCCAC Academic All-Conference selection.

Owens is led by ten-year coach Sonny Lewis and assistants are Denny Caldwell and Alison Mugler. The Express will open its home campaign by hosting the Owens Express Invitational, Sept. 3-5.

Last season, the Express women’s volleyball program completed their season with a 32-20 overall record. Owens finished in second place in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (9-3). The team’s season concluded with a loss to St. Clair County in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region XII Championships.

“I am really looking forward to the start of the upcoming season,” Lewis stated. “This year’s team has really worked hard and put forth the effort in the preseason. The potential is there for this group to be mentioned among the great teams in the program’s long and storied history. However, we have to get better each and every day to achieve our goals.”


The Oak Harbor soccer team is returning Second Team All-Ohio forward and Sandusky Bay Conference Most Outstanding Player Phil Weirich for his senior season.

Last year, Weirich scored 27 goals and had 18 assists while also being chosen First Team All-District and First Team All-SBC. He also returns as the team captain.

Last year, Oak Harbor was 15-5 overall and 8-3-1 in the SBC. Key losses from last year’s team include Jesse Baker, Brandon Wasserman, and Drew Stone.

Also returning on offense are senior forward Ian Miller (six goals, eight assists), senior midfielder Tyler Eoff (20 goals, 14 assists), senior midfielder Alex Swope (seven goals, five assists), junior midfielder Caden Goldstein (three goals, six assists), junior midfielder J.J. Rathbun (two goals, one assist). Eoff was a First Team All-District and All-SBC selection, while Swope earned honorable mention honors in the SBC.

Defensive returnees include senior D.J. Reau (one goal, two assists), senior Myles Backus (one goal, three assists), junior Jake Hetrick (three goals, four assists), and junior Phil Bryant (one goal, two assists). Reau was a First Team All-SBC, Second Team District choice, Backus was Second Team SBC, Honorable Mention District, and Hetrick was Honorable Mention SBC last season.
