Contrary to what some people might have thought, second-year Cardinal Stritch volleyball coach John Kazmaier

didn't worry too much after graduating eight seniors from last year's Toledo Area Athletic Conference co-championship team.

“I kept 10 players (on the roster) this year and it is somewhat of an inexperienced team,” Kazmaier said, “but the seniors I have are good leaders. They took a lot away from last season and they were really prepared and excited to take the reins their senior year.

“A lot of girls came up from the jayvee squad who had a lot of playing time last year, and a lot of girls played club volleyball in the offseason. I was very impressed with the improvements I saw from the girls in the offseason.”

The Cardinals, who finished 14-8 and 7-1 in the TAAC a year ago, have won six of their first 12 matches this season and are 3-1 in conference play. They have beaten Emmanuel Christian, Danbury, Ottawa Hills, Gibsonburg, Swanton and Erie Mason. Their losses have been to Toledo Christian, Northview, Defiance, Delta, Maumee and Fostoria.

“We have a lot of girls with a strong desire to win and make themselves better,” Kazmaier said. “It's not just about the win-loss. They want to make sure they're also improving on the volleyball court and showing hard work on the court this year. The team gets along really well. We've focused a lot more on team bonding, and with this team it's real easy. They're all pretty good friends and they get along really well.”

All four returning letterwinners are seniors, including team captains Stacy Molnar and Sam Uher. Molnar is an outside hitter and Uher is a middle blocker and the team's top hitter this season.

It's all in the perception.

For third-year coach Ken Katschke and the Genoa boys’ soccer team, perception is reality in 2010.

The Comets, who won 14 games and reached the Division III district finals a year ago, had an 0-7-2 record heading into Thursday's home game against Suburban Lakes League power Lake.

What's been missing for Genoa this season? The Comets have 22 players on their roster, and eight players have missed at least one game due to injury.

“We've had a minimum of three starters out every game,” Katschke said. “I was out five guys for some games. We've been good for six years and all of a sudden – pow! We're rebuilding this year. This is the smallest and youngest team to ever go through Genoa. We knew we were going to take some licks, but the injuries are just killing us this year.”

Eastwood is looking to avenge a recent string of losses to Genoa this year, but will have to do it behind a youngpic-Eastwoodfb3 squad.

In this, the 53rd edition of a rivalry that dates back to when both teams were in the Northern Lakes League, Eastwood (2-2) coach Jerry Rutherford believes his team can give the Comets (4-0) a battle this year, now that they have some experience behind them.

“It took us a while to develop an identity, but I think we’re on track,” said Rutherford.

It was Rutherford who took over the team’s defense this year for the first time in his long tenure.

“It’s been an adjustment for me, but I’ve enjoyed it,” he said. “I’ve always been involved with the defense, but not to this level. I would say it’s been interesting – a lot of fun.”
