Skilliter, Miller head into sophomore seasons at Mt. Union The University of Mount Union football team returns only nine starters and 31 letter winners, but Coach Larry Kehres probably is approaching his 25th season as head coach much like the last 24, which is good if you are a fan of the Purple Raiders.
Kehres has two players from Genoa to help him determine who will get a chance to win a letter in 2010. Fiive-foot-8, 180 pound Blair Skilliter is a sophomore running back, and 5-10, 220 pound Tyler Miller, who lives in Genoa but attended St. Francis de Sales, is a sophomore defensive lineman.
As a freshman, Skilliter played in six games, rushing for 101 yards on 20 carries and returning three kicks for 44 yards. He had five rushes for 41 yards against Albright (Pa) on Dec. 5. He was an All-Ohio selection for Coach Mike Vicars at Genoa. Miller was a three year letter winner in football, All-City selection and Academic First Team for coach Dick Cromwell at St. Francis
Replacing players at key positions and reloading a roster will be the charge of Kehres and his staff who look to continue a run of 18 consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference Championships (1992-2009) while contending for a record 11th NCAA Division III National Championship.

Veteran football coaches Mike Donnelly, Jerry Rutherford, and Michael Vicars are

no strangers to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Rutherford’s Eastwood teams and Vicars’ Genoa teams may be bitter rivals on the field, but off the field they remain strong advocates of the faith-based organization.
When the two football teams square off on October 1 at Eastwood’s Freedom Field for what could become another Suburban Lakes League showdown, don’t be surprised if both teams huddle afterwards for a word of prayer again this year. That will likely happen no matter what happens on the field, Vicars says.
“I’ll tell you what, the Eastwood-Genoa rivalry thing is definitely high spirited and it’s a big, big rivalry. No question about that, just because Eastwood has had such great success,” Vicars said.
“My point is not only is it a great rivalry, but it’s a tremendously respected rivalry. I think a big reason for that is some of the FCA involvement. It’s been very typical to play a great, tough game, even if the game is a blowout, for both teams to be very respectful of each other. Especially after the game, both teams will get together. Not only do we do it in football, but we do it in basketball and baseball as well.

Matt Yunker is the community outreach coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, and he's also a 1999 graduate of Swanton High School.
The Swanton community, and nearby Delta, suffered heavy damage on June 5, the same night a tornado ripped through Millbury and destroyed homes and left Lake High School in ruins.
“When I went back home to Swanton the following weekend after those storms happened, you see that stuff and you think those are the types of things you only see in movies,” Yunker said. “To see it in person was extremely eye-opening. People had mentioned that Lake High School was heavily impacted. I did some research the next day, and from going online and watching the national news that the school was flattened, that's when I realized how bad it was.”
When he returned to Cleveland, Yunker told fellow Browns employees how the tornado had affected his hometown as well as Millbury and, in particular, Lake High School.
“I told them what happened and I asked what could we think about doing and to keep in the back of their mind that the school was destroyed,” Yunker said. “I wanted us to keep these kids in mind. At that point, it just snowballed.”
For starters, several Browns players, who wish to remain anonymous, donated several pairs of cleats to the Lake football team. The Browns organization also donated Under Armour practice pants and T-shirts.
Yunker said his jaw nearly dropped when he visited Millbury to drop off the equipment and meet with Lake's football squad.
