In D-III, despite having defeated Elmwood in a dual match, Genoa is ranked sixth and the Royals are third. Elmwood is also ranked 10th in the state poll, Genoa is unranked.

At Napoleon’s Gold Medal Duals, Genoa reeled off a perfect nine dual victories, outscoring their opposition by a combined 521-140.  Genoa also avenged their only loss on the year to Northern Buckeye Conference rival Eastwood in the opening round by downing the Eagles, 48-16.

Genoa first locked up with the Tornados of Columbian, and the Comets were down by two team points. One match remained with a victory needed to win.  Junior 170 pounder Mike Snider answered the call in dramatic fashion by pinning Tyler Meshard early in the second period to secure the Comet dual victory by a score of 36-31.

Genoa next outdistanced the Panthers of St. Mary, 42-22, to sweep its fifth consecutive tri-meet on the season. Genoa set a new school record for most dual victories in a season and most consecutive dual wins.

Chris Spielman table
Eastwood softball parent Michael R. Foster and Marjorie Flores, the wife of the late Harvey Flores, traveled to Columbus Friday morning to have a table autographed by former Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman at the Stephanie Spielman Breast Cancer Research Center, which is being renamed for Spielman’s late wife. The 46-inch concrete patio table was built by Pemberville native Dave Fahle.

The table comes with a breast cancer ribbon and also has a 10-inch etching of a football and the expression “Let’s Sack Breast Cancer” engraved, along with an autographed Spielman football helmet. It will be raffled by the Eastwood softball team. One-half of the revenue raised is going to the Spielman Research Center, the other half to the softball team.

“This is a case where everybody wins, the cancer research team wins, the softball team wins, Dave wins because he gets some notoriety. There are very few times when you do something like this where everybody wins,” Foster said. “They (Harvey and Marjorie Flores) are Michigan fans, but she wants to go down because of the way he (Spielman) is carrying on his wife’s legacy.”

Tickets are being sold through the spring at $5 each. Call Foster at 419-872-3859, 1-800-245-5782 or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
