Woodmore wrestler Evan Ulinski looks to return to state
Woodmore sophomore wrestler Evan Ulinski looks to return to the state wrestling meet this year. Evan was a league, sectional and district champion last year and a state qualifier as well.

Ulinski’s preseason rank was as high as second in the state in one poll.

“My goal is to win state this year,” said Ulinski.

Ulinski wrestles in the 106 pound weight class. He has lost almost 20 pounds to make this weight.

“I think this weight class gives me the best chance to win,” said Ulinski.

He has only one loss so far this season. He won the Bob Bailey Invitational at Bellevue High School and Woodmore’s A Classic. He took second at the Wendy’s Invitational at Tiffin Columbian. He feels he has become a better wrestler since last year.

“I know how to handle pressure better and I’ve become better at getting up off the bottom,” he said.

Ulinski plans to wrestle at the college level in a few years, but his main focus right now is winning state.

With almost half of the season complete, the Woodmore wrestling team focuses on finishing strong. With a team record of 5-6 the team isn’t satisfied and looks to improve.

“We have to work on finishing take downs and getting off the bottom,” said senior Cody Lockhart.

The team is led by senior Dexter Emch, who has an individual record of 15-2 and Ulinksi who has a record of 16-1

At Woodmore’s annual A Classic tournament the team placed second out 17 schools. Besides Ulinski, they had three champions —freshmen Seth Gaghen at 120 pounds, Emch at 132 and Lockhart at 170. MAL invites four schools
A source revealed that the Midland Athletic League at its January 30 meeting voted to invite four districts, but Lakota Superintendent and league president Rebecca Heimlich declined to say what schools. The league also had a discussion with its executive committee and on Jan. 10, voted on some language changes for its constitution.

The MAL currently has 12 members (Lakota, Fostoria St. Wendelin, North Baltimore, Old Fort, Bettsville, New Riegel, Seneca East, Mohawk, Hopewell-Loudon, Tiffin Calvert, Fremont St. Joseph, Carey). The MAL was founded in 1985. Mark King is currently the commissioner.

On September 8, 2009, Gibsonburg and Elmwood were denied admission to the MAL before Gibsonburg joined the Toledo Area Athletic Conference and Elmwood the Northern Buckeye Conference.

On December 1, 2011, Carey, Mohawk, and Seneca East announced they would be leaving the MAL to help form the new Northern 10 Athletic Conference in 2014 with Bucyrus, Buckeye Central, Colonel Crawford, Crestline, Riverdale, Wynford and Ridgedale.
