Lake selects playoff veteran as head football coach
Lake Local Schools completed its search for a new head football coach over the holiday break, receiving 54 applicants for the position, interviewing eight candidates and selecting Bob Olwin.
Olwin comes to the Lake with 30 years of experience as a head football coach. During his career he achieved 10 conference championships and participated in the state playoffs seven times. Coach Olwin has taken three different schools to the state playoffs — Versailles, Fairview, and Tiffin Calvert.
“Coach Olwin comes with a lot of experience as a head football coach,” Lake Athletic Director Dave Shaffer said. “A proven winner — he has been very successful and we look forward to those successes at Lake.”

Countless players under Olwin have received all-state recognition, with several holding state records. He currently comes from Versailles High School in the southwest district of Ohio, Darke County. Versailles, which participates in the Midwest Athletic Conference, finished with a 9-3 record and second place finish in the MAC. Additionally, Versailles participated in the playoffs, losing a second round game to eventual state runner-up and MAC foe Coldwater.
Coach Olwin received Southwest Ohio District Coach of the Year honors this past fall. He is most notably known for his accomplishments at Sherwood Fairview, in the northwest district of Ohio, Defiance County. While at Fairview he amassed a record of 104-33, won seven Green Meadows Conference championships and appeared in the state playoffs five times during a 13-year career.
Olwin replaces Bob Abbey, a Lake alumnus who coached five years, accumulating a 21-29 record. Abbey’s 2011 team won its final two games to finish 5-5 and 4-3 in the Northern Buckeye Conference.
