Oregon’s Dippman, Pollock in contention at Hangover

Sandusky Speedway ushered in 2012 with the 32nd Annual Hangover Race on January 1.

Oregon drivers Mark Pollock and Dan Dippman were in contention to win Champagne Stock races, and then Dippman got his chance in the Moonshine Stocks.

“This race is run no matter what the weather, but today’s 50 mile-per-hour wind gusts made things down right brutal. The lack of snow did nothing to deter the race fans from bringing their own snow and snow balls as there was a barrage of snow balls flying from the grandstands as the cars raced by,” stated a press release by track promoter Kevin Jaycox.

In the Champagne Stock division, the heat race win went to Ron Miller of Lambertville, Michigan, driving a topless dirt track late model. Pollock took the point early on and had the lead at various times, going neck and neck with Miller. But on the final lap Pollock took the high road, Miller took the inside, and Pollock crashed into the tires along the wall — putting him towards last place because he did not finish. The remainder of the top five spots went to Mark Kachemmaister, Jim Deutsch, Jeff Warnick and Steve Morris.

In the 25 lap Champagne Stock feature, it was once again Miller, who has now won eight out of the last nine Hangover races. Dippman was the early race leader for the first two laps before another Oregon driver took the point.

Miller was working his way through the pack and took command of the lead on lap 13 and was never seriously challenged again for the lead. The top five were Miller, Dippman, Kachemmaister, Warnick and Bob Swanson.

The Champagne Stock class is an open competition. Drivers can enter any car with load bolts and use any tire.

Joey Wyckoff won the Whiskey Stocks first heat race, followed by Jason Parson, Cody Rose, Jason Dennis and Jerry Adkins. The second heat race winner was Mark Reasor followed by Cory Phillips, Jerry Adkins, Joe Quinn and Steve Jones.

The 20 lap Whiskey Stock feature saw Joey Wyckoff take off with the lead and it appeared he would go on to take the checkered flag until lap 10 when Wyckoff made contact with the back straight wall. Wyckoff was not injured, but this ended his afternoon.

The race would be red flagged one lap later when Drew Smith, who was not injured made hard contact with the wall coming out of turn two. On the restart it was Cody Rose the new leader who would go on to take the checkered flag. The top five were Cody Rose, Jerry Adkins, Jason St. John, Chris Priebe and Cory Phillips.

The Whiskey Stock is for any American-made front wheel drive four or six cylinder engine. Manual transmission engines are allowed for four cylinder engines, but no manual transmission is allowed for six cylinder autos. In addition, all tires must be the same size.

In the Moonshine Stocks it was Steve Morris winning the heat race. Following Morris was Rich Abel, Kenny Calhoun, Bob Swanson and Anthony Camilli.

The 15-lap Moonshine Stock feature saw two complete restarts before one lap was in the record books. When the field had settled down it was Rich Abel the leader for the first two circuits before Dippman would take the lead for only lap three.

The race leader on lap four was Tim Deutsch with Kenny Calhoun running a close second. Calhoun took the lead on lap eight and checked out on the field to take the checkered flag unchallenged. The top five were Kenny Calhoun, Tim Deutsch, Mark Kachemmaister, Kerry Rouse and Bob Swanson.

The Moonshine Stock is for stock production cars equipped with full roll cages, cast iron block and heads, and two-barrel engines with limitations on racing tires. No Chevrolet Camaros allowed.
