More experienced Woodmore wrestlers plan for success

This year, an older and more experienced Woodmore wrestling team looks to make a run at the Northern Buckeye Conference title.

The Wildcats return with three seniors in Gavin Beard, Dexter Emch and Cody Lockhart. The team also has returning sophomore state qualifier Evan Ulinski, who finished with an outstanding 39-3 record last year. Ulinski has cut over 15 pounds to qualify for the 106 pound weight class and is currently ranked No. 1 in the class by the Greater Toledo Wrestling Coaches Association.

“My personal goal is to win state, but I would love to win a league championship as a team,” said Ulinski.

With a last place finish in the Suburban Lakes League last season, this year’s seniors look to improve greatly.

“We plan on improving this year with harder practices and gaining more members on the team,” said Lockhart. “We are aiming for a top three finish this year, which is a huge jump from last season,” added Emch.

This season, the team will be led by mostly upperclassmen with Emch wrestling at 138, Lockhart at 170, Beard at 152, and junior Colten Datkun at 113.

“The team looks forward and hopes to do well at the “A” Classic, the Northern Buckeye Conference championship and the sectionals this year,” said Emch.

Skilliter’s Raiders runner-up
No. 2 ranked Mount Union rallied in the fourth quarter but three turnovers resulted 13-10 loss to No. 1 ranked Wisconsin-Whitewaterin Stagg Bowl XXXIX, the NCAA Division III national championship, Friday night in Salem, Va. The game was nationally televised by ESPN.

Whitewater (15-0) won its third-straight national championship and extended the nation's longest winning streak to 45 games.

Mount Union junior running back Blair Skilliter (Genoa) had three kickoff returns for 58 yards, but did not carry the football from scrimmage even though he was the Purple Raider’s second leading rusher during the season. In 15 games, Skilliter ran for 547 yards (6.8 per carry) and seven touchdowns.

Northern cage players
There are two No. 20s on Ohio Northern University basketball rosters — Jacob Faykosh (Eastwood) is a six-foot, 160 pound senior guard on the men’s team and Katie Jones (Gibsonburg) is a 5-9 junior guard on the women’s team.

The Ohio Northern women continue to receive votes in the fourth D3Hoops.com weekly poll. Through last weekend’s games, the Polar Bears are received 25 votes, placing them 29th overall in the country.

Northern is currently riding a seven-game winning streak, following an 80-36 rout of Marietta last Saturday. The team is 8-1 overall and currently sits alone in first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with its 3-0 conference record. Jones has played in all nine games, has 10 points, six assists, one steal, and six rebounds averaging eight minutes per game.

Ohio Northern men are 6-2 overall and 3-1 in OAC play. Faykosh, who missed much of last season because of an injury, has played sparingly in one game and scored one point.
