Waite hall of fame football coach and player Elmer V. Scallish passed away November 16. He was head coach at Waite starting in 1957 and his two teams were ranked 13th and 16th in the state.
Scallish was director of the Northwest Ohio Football Coaches Association and later assisted previous Waite coach Jack Mollenkopf, whom he played for at Waite, when he at Purdue.
Scallish began a lifelong association with athletics as a player at Waite, where he earned four varsity football awards from 1943 to 1947. During this time he was an all-city defensive tackle three years, all-state two years and co-captain of the team his senior year. As a blocking back and tackle, Scallish played on two state championship football teams in 1944 and 1946.

He also earned three varsity awards in baseball, two in track and was the Northwestern Ohio Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Golden Gloves Ohio state runner up.
Scallish went on to attend Purdue University where he earned three varsity football awards, and was heavyweight boxing champion his junior and senior years on his way to earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education in 1951. He received his Masters Degree in Administration in 1956 from The University of Toledo.
His coaching experience began at his alma mater, Waite, as head line coach from 1951 through 1956. In 1956, he was appointed head football coach and head wrestling coach at Waite. That same year, he was honored by being selected as assistant coach at the Ohio High School North-South All Star Football Game.
Scallish was named football line coach at Purdue University from 1958 through 1960. From there he moved on to George Washington University as line coach for one year before serious illness in his family brought him back to Toledo and forced him to give up coaching until 1963. That year, Scallish was named defensive coordinator of the Toledo Tornadoes of the Continental Football League.
After seven years with the Tornadoes, Scallish left coaching once again to pursue a career in education administration with the Toledo School System. He was named assistant principal and dean of boys at Woodward High School from 1969 through 1971. In 1971, he moved back once again to Waite as assistant principal until 1975 when he was selected as supervisor of adult education for the Toledo Public Schools.

In 1981 he moved up to Coordinator of Student Activities and Athletic Development for Toledo Public Schools until 1983 when he moved into his current position of Vocational Job Placement Coordinator.
Scallish was a longtime member of the Old Newsboys. He has participated in many roles including serving as President of the organization in 1978.
Scallish and his family have been a key factor in the success of the Old Newsboys annual fund drive for many years, the organization states. In fact, in 2007 the Old Newsboys estimated that Elmer and the Scallish family had raised over $660,000 for the Old Newsboys Charity Fund.
Bill Sanford, President of the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Association recently spoke about Elmer's contributions to the Old Newsboys, “With his strong commitment to the needy children of this area and his dedication to the Old Newsboys mission, Elmer truly exemplifies the character of our organization. We all appreciate the work he and his family put into the paper sale campaign each year. His leadership and energy is critically important to the Old Newsboys — we are proud to recognize him for his loyalty and hard work.”
